Our vet recommends HeartGuard, which is just Ivermectin.
I didn't even want to take ivermectin ONCE to get rid of mites so I have cognitive dissonance about giving it to my dog every month for the better part of the year for the rest of her life.
Are there OTC and/or holistic prevention alternatives? Laurel is pretty good about eating supplements. She eats Instinct brand frozen lamb for breakfast and dinner and enjoys sharing fresh vegetables, fruits, grains, beans, etc. with me.
I know that Heartworm isn't a death sentence any more, but we are low income as well as rural and might have difficulty accessing services. Laurel is also a young mix who needs a lot more outdoor time than an older purebred might.
I also overthink these things sometimes, lol.
