Hi there: So, to give a quick explanation......I adopted a 2.5 year old male chihuahua -- Geordie -- about 6 months ago. I was told he was paper trained but as soon as I got him he just seemed to not know how to use his pads and instead I would take him out for his potty breaks. When i was at work or during the night, he started peeing all over the house. He doesn't do #2 in the house....only #1.
Because of my work schedule, I've been just putting up with the peeing in the house. I'll clean in up but he always just uses another spot. I'm talking ALL over the house. There's no rhyme or reason to the spots he chooses.
I now have a two week period of time off of work during which time I decided to just go ahead and try crate training. He's a smart little guy so I figured he'd catch on even though he is grown. So today's our first day.
I fed him this morning and immediately put him in his comfy little crate that I outfitted with a sheepskin pad and his favorite blanket. He didn't fight me going in and seemd ok as I went in and out of the living room where I have placed the crate.
After an hour I came by and said "Do you want to go pee pee" (that's what I say when we go for walks). He got excited as he normally does so I took him into the bathroom where I've set out his wee wee pad (I'd like this spot to become his "potty") Well, he just sat there staring at me and didn't do anything. I stayed for about 5 minutes and then took him back to his crate. Left him in there another hour and again did the whole "Do you want to go pee pee" thing and again took him to his potty spot and he stared at me. This has now gone on 3 other times in the course of 4 hours.
I've tried to read all the threads on crate training here and I've googled it and I'm still not getting the info. I need. I guess my questions are:
Am I doing this correctly?
Am I harming him in not letting him relieve himself outside?
Has anyone else successfully paper trained an adult dog?
Any tips are very, very appreciated. Like I said above, I work a full day and we don't have access to a doggy door so I need to get him housetrained so that we can avoid all these "accidents" all over the house which are starting to really ruin our carpets and just make the whole house stink.
I feel bad that I wasn't able to crate train him from the beginning but I do love this little guy and did adopt him out of a bad situation so overall I hope I'm doing the right thing!!
Just worried that I'm doing this all wrong...........
