Ernie is doing sooooooo good I can't believe it. The problem is with the vet's instructions. Don't jump, run or play. (In other words, don't be a puppy) Helloooooo? As I'm sure any of you who have two or more dogs know, it's not easy to enforce. Ernie is still a puppy! And Buford is so glad to have him home and Ernie glad to be home that they just don't know what to do but play. I am making myself a nervous wreck trying to keep him quiet.

Any advice?

Jack was a maniac when he got home. When Jack got home I put the others in their "house" with a dingo for a good half an hour to let them all settle down and gave Jack a chewie so he'd sit too (it's about the only time he'll sit still!). I have to admit that he wasn't still but for a couple days I did have to keep the others occupied and had them take lots of breaks in their crates. I'm glad Ernie is home safe!

Glad to hear he's doing well I met a woman while on vacation that had adopted a dog from a shelter in Mississippi a katrina victim. She had heartworms & while they're getting treated they can't run around at all. She said she had to kennel her all the time she would take her out to go potty and right back in the kennel.I know it sounds cruel but that's what has to be done.

I wouldn't keep Ernie in a kennel at all times like that but if he's getting wild you could do that.

LOL All 3 of my dogs needed no pain meds after, and acted like it was a play day. One walked home 2 miles from the vet as soon as they called to let me know he could come home. Up until then he was terrified of the leash and wouldn't walk 2 steps. Chico was jumping and running around also. Just keep a good eye on the incision and he'll probably be healing up in no time.

Thank you all for your quick responses. After I posted my sister called and assured me that he's not likely to hurt himself. And now after reading your responses too, I am much calmer. Indeed if they seem to be too wild I settle them down, otherwise he seems to be doing fine. Again, thanks for such speedy responses. Hugs, Ernie, Bu and Me

I think a little bit of playing will be ok. Just try to make sure he doesn't too much. I think they'd be mostly afraid of the stitches coming out or something. My nephew's dog was running around jumping on & off the couches when we brought him & Gracie home from surgeries. He turned out fine! Or if you get worried, maybe just set up an area in the house for Ernie to be secluded. He may want to just sleep anyways if Buford isn't around. Good luck! I know I didn't have much luck with it when any of mine were done!

There's a lot of comfort in knowing that others have gone thru the same thing and their dogs have been O.K.!

I wouldn't worry about it too much. I remember when my chi got spayed, she was running around like crazy jumping up and down from the couch the very next day. Just do your best to make sure that Ernie doesn't run up and down the stairs or constantly jump up and down from furniture, but other than that there's not much you can do because like you said, a puppy will be a puppy. I remember the vet told me that I would have to limit my chi's activity for 14 days after the surgery...YEAH RIGHT! 14 days...ha! That's seriously almost impossible to do especially if you have a hyper-active chi. So, like others have been saying, don't worry about it too much. Just keep an eye out on Ernie, and maybe would it be possible to keep Ernie in a separate room or something so he can get some rest periodically? Good luck, and I'm glad to hear that Ernie's surgery went well.
