Unhappy Zoey is sick

Zoe has now been sick officially for 2 months now and the vet hasn't done any real testing but a fecal. Let me explain her symptoms just in case someone may have an idea what may be the cause. It started with diarrhea and her not eating or acting herself one day and then by the next day she was back to normal except for the diarrhea. Her poop has been inconsistant this whole time. One day it was like watery the next it would be solid or the next time it would be so so and she has also had bloody diahrrea. You get the picture. She has thrown up a handful of times since becoming sick and it is yellow. I have taken her to the vet 3 times!!!!!!!! We took a fecal exam in the 1st time that she got sick to check for worms or parasites which it came back negative. We took her back to a different vet. She again did a fecal exam and did a floater with it which I guess they can see harder to find parasites with a floater. Again negative. She gave me medicine for Giardia which is a parasite. We went home and we gave her that medicine for about 8 days. It didn't help!!!! Keep in mind she would act normal for about a week and then she would have one of those episodes where she would lay around and not eat again. This usually last all day and then by the next day back to normal besides her poo. We took her back to the vet again around Nov. 21 b/c she had pooped a lot of blood all over my carpet!!!!! This time the vet gave me another medicine which is used for Coccidia and she also gave me perscription dog food to see if it maybe a food allergy. Again we followed the vets orders. It seemed to be working her poo was consistently solid and she never had a down day till Dec 9. We made it almost 2 1/2 weeks without her getting sick. She was pretty much better by late afternoon on the 9th. Today again she is not eating and is just laying around. I don't know what to do anymore!!!!! I wish when I took her to the vet this last time they would have done a blood test. I'm tired of her getting sick!!! And I'm tired of paying for vet visits and they aren't doing any testing. My mom keeps saying she has a tender tummy. She only eats her dogs food and nothing else. She is almost 7 months old and weighs a little under 2 1/2 #'s so she is way to tiny to really be left unattended in the house so we know where she is at at all times so I highly doubt it's something she is eating. Does ANYONE have any idea what may be wrong with little Zoe!!!! I plan on taking her to the vet again on Wednesday.

Sorry this post is so long!
Thanks,
Kristin

I would look into seeing a different vet....maybe one that specializes in small breeds.

Actually this vet is who we use for the chihuahua rescue I work with. She has several chi's of her own plus she was raised around chi's. I made another appointmet for Zoe on Wednesday and I won't leave till they do a blood test at least. I can't find anything online that matches the issues Zoe is having. Like I said we went almost 2 1/2 weeks with solid poo and no episodes of not eating and laying around. She relapsed on Dec. 9 and again today It's just so weird. Like I guarantee by the time I get home this evening from work she'll be back to normal. I'm just so frustrated!!! I hate seeing her sick! Especially with how small she is. She has been gaining weight though thru this ordeal. I'm just hoping the blood test will reveal something and if it does I pray it isn't something to serious or life threatening.

This sounds very similar to what I've experienced with Beau...but unfortunately I never figured out the cause for sure. It actually happened while he was under my mom's care for a few months, and it seemed to happen about once a month for a few months, only lasting for a couple of days at a time, and then he'd be back to normal.

He had diarreah, sometimes bloody, and was throwing up, mostly bile. My mom took him to the vet and they gave him fluids because he was dehydrated, and they also gave him some liquid medicine to help settle his stomach so he could eat without throwing up. And some pills for his diarreah. They took a fecal and other tests and found nothing. Next they did a blood panel, and again found nothing. They put him on Hill's I/d for awhile also, to help him eat. Since I wasn't there, I can't say for sure that it wasn't just something random that he ate. But the fact that it was recurrent with the same sypmtoms each time makes me think it must have been something else, not just something he ate. But I don't know what.

I did change his heartworm preventative, which *may* have been the cause, and which would make sense with the timing with it happening monthly. Maybe you can try using something different, if you think that might be the cause. Try and remember exactly when the sickness started each time and whether you had just given him anything like that.

I know there are some parasites that go undetected, so maybe he has something that just doesn't shown up. Or, the vet told my mom that if it kept happening (which it hasn't since then), that it might be pancreatitis (sp?).

Whatever it is, don't give up hope. Maybe you'll be able to notice some sort of pattern and pinpoint the cause.

Thanks Jangles. She hasn't had a heartworm preventative in awhile so I highly doubt that's a cause. She doesn't get treats or table scraps or any chew toys that can be eaten. Just her perscribed food the vet gave us the last time we were there. Her illness recurs about once a week or a little longer and it doesn't last longer then a day. My husband just stopped by home at lunch time and said she was being playful. So did Beau finally stop having these episodes? And about how many months did he have this problem?

All 3 of my chis had coccidia when I got them. Of coarse they were 8 to 12 weeks old, not 7 months. But they all had to be on medicine for different lengths of time before it went away. Sandy, I believe, was on it for the longest amount of time, about 3 weeks before it went away.
So maybe they just stopped the medicine too soon

Also, one of Alisha's chis has pancriatitis, so maybe she can help with the symptoms there.

I hope you can find out what it is!

We were on medicine for Coccidia and it seemed to be working but then after about 2 1/2 weeks free of any illness she had a relapse on 12/9 and again today. She wouldn't take the medicine this morning but my husband said it was gone when he went home at lunch. I'll have to read up on pancriatitis now.

Thanks for all the suggestions! Keep them coming.
