Default Boarding

In may I am getting married in Tahoe and all of my family is coming we are going for 5 days and I have to leave my two chi's in a kennel. I have decided to leave them at a kennel that I have heard good things about from more than a few people. I am really nervous about leaving them and have only left them once before with a friend. Could any one share their experiences with leaving their chi's in boarding and maybe how it works. Do they get to stay in the same kennel? I guess I just don't know how the whole operation works and would like some advice.
Thanks Tiffany

I've kenneled my other dogs, but haven't my chi yet. They will be okay, make sure you send them with a special blankie or pllow, something from home. It gives them a sense of security. I always made them treat bags, put each of their names on and requested that they get them the same time of day that I gave them at home. Also, I requested that they be kenneled in the same kennel together or I wouldn't leave them. I lucked out an found a family that had a small kennel at their home, so someone was there at all times. Congratulations on your wedding.

Thank you! Its always good to ask questions rather than worry. Do kennels find it annoying to call an check on them?

It sometimes depends on the place. I worked at a kennel for a while. It also depended on the time of year & how busy they are.

Usually if you request them to be together, they'll keep them together unless they notice them starting to fight or something.

Blankets - if they brought in a blanket we would usually try to keep it with them (unless we were super busy & unless they kept pottying on it). The less busy the kennel is, the more attention & special treatment they'll probably get.

I would take some of their food too. Otherwise, they'll just be fed whatever food they keep out to feed the dogs with (ours used Science Diet).

Check with the kennel about walking. Some do it for free, some charge you extra.

If you call in advance, they'll usually let you tour the kennel too so you can see what its like before you bring them. Some will let you tour any time & some will ask that you come in between certain times (usually not first thing in the morning, so they have a chance to get it cleaned)

I usually bring something for the workers when I have to take my dogs in for something (like when Gracie was spayed & had to stay overnight). I know that they all love getting something for breakfast - donuts, bagels, whatever. So I took in a box of donuts to suck up a little! lol

I'm sure they'll be fine though. No one can resist cute little chis! And congrats on your wedding!

Piña does really well at our vets when she is kennelled (2x now). She gets extra attention (once she calms down, she is usually a bit nasty for the first day there). When I picked her up in June after being there for 5 days, the vet assistant said "Aunt Judy will miss you..." Funny how attached they get to the little ones ...

We never got annoyed if people called in to check on their babies. Now if you call 10 times a day, that might get a tad annoying!

It might even be a good idea to go in & see if you can tour the place but bring your little one along. That way they can meet your chis & vice versa. Then they won't be so shocked when you leave them there. Plus, it will give the people that work there time to meet them. The more you're around a dog, the more attached you get to them. There were definitely some dogs that I got attached to when I worked there & I have to admit, I did give them a little extra attention!

I have boarded Corky last January (we didn't have Lizzy yet) before at our vet's office - they are the only people I felt comfortable leaving him with. He did great and had fun. I called each day to check on him. He was boarded in January and there was only like 1 other dog so he got SO much attention!

We actually have to board both Corky and Lizzy starting next Friday through the following Friday while we are in Las Vegas. They will be there 7 days/6 nights. I am of course stressing about it again b/c Lizzy has never been boarded and she is a little crabby sometimes with new people. Corky loves anyone! They will be boarded together though and I take their toys, blankets and food. I will call every day or two and check in on them. I have local people on standby in case something happens they need a local contact.

Good suggestion about treating the staff! I love them anyway so they deserve it but I just might bring them a little something!
