Default Problem....?

Hi everyone~
So Luna is about 19 months. And she does this sort of hacking/coughing/gagging thing when she gets excited/active, and somtimes after she drinks. I talked to my vet about it, and she said not to worry, that it's normal and caused from too-small airways. :/
Does anyone else's Chi do this? If so, is there something you could do to make it better, or is it just a 'wait and see' kind of thing? I get kind of worried every time it happens.

Hiya, is it sort of a hoarse cough, slightly croupy sounding? If so, my chi does it after drinking too!! xx

Dolly does the exact same thing! Always after drinking, sometimes after excitement. In fact, she does it so much, that when she had kennel cough, at first I thought it was "more of the same". KC was a lot like that, but not just after drinking or playing, it was just "whenever". So, if your vet has ruled out KC, I think it IS normal. I don't like it either, but I'm getting used to it. She is about 18 mos. old.

Sounds like reverse sneezing. All 3 of my chi's do this. It's quite common. It does usually occur when playing, excitement, drinking, or eating to fast. The best thing to do is try to common them down so they breath normally. Rub their throat.

reverse sneezing is very common in the breed, especially when they just had a drink or are excited or if its dusty/the air is dry.
its not a medical issue unless the dog does it while shes sleeping, if theres alot of these attacks in the middle of the night or waking the dog from a deep sleep have the vet check her throat and windpipe, but if its during normal waking hours its not something you need to worry about.

the best way to quicken the stop of a bout of reverse sneezing is to cover the nostrils and gently rub the throat, by making the dog breath through the mouth it realighnes the palet.
its scary the first few times but not something you need to worry about

Like everyone else said it's very common with chis. Jinxy does it when she's excited and very rarely when she drinks. I was worried the first time Jinxy did it. Luna is fine, don't worry!
