I adopted a Japanese Chin from a shelter who got her from a puppy mill. She's about 4 years old. I actually got her for my grandmother, who quickly learned that she really couldn't keep up with a dog. She then lived with me, then my friend & her dad, and now is living with my friend's brother & sister-in-law (hopefully forever)
She's very timid when she first meets people & is apparently still very timid around males. She is a great dog...very sweet, potty trained really easily. Took a while to get used to a leash. She was really just like any other dog that you would adopt - they all have their issues, I think. I guess my only advice would be to just be patient. Good luck!
