Smile Air travel w/chi advise please

Hello all~
I haven't posted here in ages, so I probably don't know many of you.
Because opf a family emergency I may need to travel from California to northern Minnesota by the weekend or early next week. My dog Max will probably have to come with me because I haven't found anyone to watch him for me.
I'd like to hear from those of you have traveled with your chihuahua's in the past, and may have information or travel tips to pass along .... any little bit would be very appreciated! Has anyone used Northwest airlines? Are there specific questions I need to ask when calling the airline?
Any detailed stories you have may help me ...
Thank you!
Tamara & Max

Hey Tamara!

I just saw this. I know you're going through a rough time. I still think the way to do it (when it's time) is to be sure he can be in the cabin with you. You should ask what paperwork needs to be filled out (each airline has slightly different requirements, as I recall...I haven't done it in years though). Some of the vet paperwork I had to get, I remember had to be within two days of flying, stuff like that.

I just hope it all works out and you can manage to take sweet Max with you!

Good luck!

first off, call the airline your planning on using and ask:
do you allow pets in the cabin?
if the answer is yes ask What is your maxium size for a dog in cabin?
(some airlines dont allow any dog over 5lbs in the cabin, others let any dog up to 10lbs in cabin, others dont allow dogs in the cabin at all!)
then ask: What size carrier do i need to travel in cabin with him, ask for the exact measurments of carry on pet carrier size, then ask if they have a specific brand they prefer you to use.
i know pet flys and sherpa brand are 2 that are aproved for use on most airlines, they WILL have a size restriction on carrier size as its supposed to fit under seat. agin each airline might have slightly different size restrictions.
once youve determined he can fly in cabin with you and the type and size of carrier your going to need you then need to focus on what paperwork you need for him.
ALL airlines require a veterninary health certificat and proof of rabies vaccination.
some airlines allow you to aquire this up to a week in advance, others the certificate must be aquired the day before the flight.

then between booking your flight and the date of your flight call multiple times to confirm your dog is booked as carry on! ive had frineds who the airline said yes dog is carryon then upon arrival to the airport say that the dog has to go in cargo, so always check... ALOT!

then for traveling, if you have a typically nervous pooch a calmant might be good, i use bachs rescue remidy wiht my dogs, but a high strung dog might need vet strenght tranqs, its always best to have a pill and dosage on hand just incase the pup starts acting up or getting ancy midflight.
in the pockets on his carrier have your vets health certificate, and his rabies tags (if there not attatched to his collar)
you also want to have a bottle of water on hand an a bag of his food (or a can of wet food) and a tube of nutrical or something similar.
make sure hes got some cushy blankets in his carrier, and a toy or 2, most airlines do NOT allow your dog out of its carrier during flight, some do however allow you after takeof to put the carrier on your lap and open it but your dog MUST stay in the carrier.

get him used to the carrier BEFORE having to fly.

most lil dogs fly pretty well...vixie loves the attention lol.

I flew with mine last year on American Airlines. He did fine, I just made sure that he had some chew toys in case his ears were popping. No one on the plane even realized he was there

I did call numerous times to make sure that he was still booked to be a carry on and I had heard that they only allow three pets per plane usually 1 in first class and 2 in other. It costed me $80 to bring him.

I did call several times about paper work I would need, rabies certificate etc... but the airline told me I wouldnt need anything?? and never asked for any?? I would find out and possibly take it anyway just in case so you dont run into problems.

We ran into a couple that has 2 chis at home that they usually take with them on the plane and they said that they had never paid for their chis to fly with them and that they always snuck them on???????? I keep wondering about the xray machine and how this could hurt them? No way I would take any chances
