Default Dry vs Moist

As part of my homework I've also been looking at food. A girlfriend of mine feeds her baby on Royal Canin Chihuahua 28. My question is, is it ok to always feed your chi dry food? or should you mix it with tinned food? I know dry food is good for their teeth, but is it good for their general well being in the long run?
And another one whilst I'm here on the topic food, does anyone use automatic feeders when they're out? Me and my boyfriend both work and I wouldn't want to alter her routine whilst she was a baby still.

Thanks everyone x

In my research, I have found that dry food is better in the long run for overall health compared to feeding the canned food. However, I think this depends on what kind of product you use. For example, if you go with a holistic brand, such as Merrick, I'm sure it's fine. Also, if you brush your chi's teeth and give them chews, etc., I don't think it would be harmful for their oral health to feed canned food. HOwever, I wouldn't exclusively feed canned food as there are certain nutrients that are in dry food that would make the diet more complete. Also, since chis are prone to developing oral problems, this would be another reason why I wouldn't exclusively feed canned food. I don't think it would be a problem though if you gave it once in awhile as a treat. That's what I do. I hope this was helpful...

Dry food is generally better not only for the teeth but also for the roughage, wet food doesnt have the right fiber contant and can lead to blocked anal glands from not clearing out properly.
my guys get a 90% dry diet, they are free fed via gravity feeders, then after dinner they get a SMALL amount of wet food each. about 2 tablespoons (1/3 of the "smaller servings" can of merrick) of wet food or some of whatever were eating (meat and veg)

the only problem ive seen with the gravity feeders is in housebreaking, eventually youll see theres a pattern to your dogs pottying habits even when free fed, but initially it does make it harder to determin when your puppy will need to go potty.
if your using puppypads (which being youll be at work all day id guess your going to pad/litterbox train) then it makes freefeeding much easier because your pup will just go potty when needed and not realy need a set schedual. (whihc is how i do it with mine)

i started mylo off on dried food, and i had real difficulty gettin him intresting in it and he was hardly eating! anyway i hav jus recently started buying butchers foil packets which he abslutley loves and i mix half with dried and he cleans his bowl which he never would have done with just dried. i feel for him its better as he is actually eating a whole meal rather than not eating anything allday! its a weigh off my shoulders and i know he enjoys it. i make sure i brush his teeth, and use dental chews.

I agree with you Sam85, I've found my Bonnie eats her dry food (Royal Canin/Advance/Innova) when I add something to it - I alternate between high quality can food, home cooked chicken/veg stew and raw meat (she gets something raw 1-2 times a week)

Cheers, Helen and Bonnie
