i would have then done at your vet, however i would find a vet thats experienced with small dog breeds, my vet wont give toy breeds their first set untill there 8 weeks. they also wont give lepto, distemper or bordatella, and wait on the rabies till 6 months.
As a breeder i hav eno problem giving the vacines myself HOWEVER i would NEVER send any puppy home without at least one physical check up by a vet, if for nothing else than to protect yourself. (a good frined of mine adopted out a pup to a seemingly wonderful family, the checks were great everything was good untill 3 days after bringing th epuppy home the people called up screaming they wanted their money back the puppy is sick, their vet said it must be somehting it had before comming home. luckily she had taken the pups to the vet at 8 weeks old for their shots then again for a general helth check before they whent home at 10 weeks, she had health certs on each of the puppies and her vet is very respected and wonderfull.
she told the people she would need to talk to their vet about this before they could take any steps further. They wouldnt give her the number untill 3 days later they called and said the puppy had died.
well long story short there was nothing wrong with the puppy, it was pretty much the same as one of those medicla insurance scams, they had paid off their vet to say the puppy was sick and then paid the "vet" to forge death certificate. they told the breeder that they couldnt retrn the body because theyd had the pup cremated.
She was lucky she took the family to court not only got back her healthy and definatly not dead puppy but also got all the legal feas. the couple and the vet were arrested for forgary and animal endangerment, there not allowed to own ANY animal for 5 years.
its ALWAYS best to be a little precautious, sometimes even the best background checks dont tell you about people like that. while thats an extreem case, had she not had the pups checked over by a cedible vet before hand those people would have never been put to "justice" and who knows what they would have done. (the police seized 3 other adult intakt dogs, 1 male and 2 females both females had young litters, and all had been sold on LIMITED/NO registration. they also found the body of a 2lb female in a chest freezer in the basement who must have died in birth as upon autopsy she had 1 little puppy still retained. the pup wouldnt have survived.)
always be safe. Spend a little extra for the saftey.
also due to this breedstendendcy to have BAD reactions to some vacines, i feel its always safer to just have them checked over and done by a vet for the first set at least.
and welcome aboard Ruby
