Default Vaccinations

I was reading today online about vaccinating at home.. has anyone ever tried doing this? If so how did it go for you? How can you tell a legit website that sells vaccines?

Cathryn,
We can get them here at the feed store. The only problem I see with vaccinating yourself is if you take a trip you do need certification from a Vet.
For instance: If I cross the border into Canada I need a passport and Vet cert. for ItZy. (proof of vaccinations & health cert.)
We always used to vacci all the animals when I was young.

Ya thats the one con to doing it yourself it technically doesn't count ..but I am interested because my boyfriend and i after a long search finally found a puppy we both loved. this saturday we get him and we want to save a little money... (btw I will post pics of the little guy this weekend)

Like I have said before I am in school for Vet Tech Degree.. and have learned how to properly administer vaccinations, thats why we are considering this.

As long as you get the right vaccines - I wonder if you can get them locally? At your Vet Tech school do they have a vet that comes in and works with you guys with animals etc?

Perhaps talk to them about it?

All of our teachers for vet tech classes are licenced veterinary technicians or veterinarians... but they do not do like free vacs at our school ( i so wish lol)

we do however do free spays and neuters (which I will be using for the pup) because it helps us in our surgical nursing class. Of course the surgeries are done by veterinarians only techs can assist

I think my sister has done her own vaccinations before, but I don't know where she gets them. Whether ordering online or buying from a feed store, I would personally want to know about the quality of the vaccines/brands and if they were stored/mailed properly (at correct temps, etc). Also, I'm sure you probably already know this, but rabies needs to be given by a licensed vet in many, if not all states (I'm not sure if it varies by state or not).

Just as a possible alternative, do you have any low-cost clinics nearby? There is a walk-in clinic about an hour from me where it only costs something like $7 a shot. Too far away from me to make it worth going, but I did find another vet in my area where I was able to have my litter of stray kittens vaccinated for only $13 apiece, with no additional office visit charge. I wouldn't use either of these vets for routine care (I like my own vet), but sometimes it's nice to save a little on basic things like vaccinations. If you could find a cheap place to have the vaccs done, you might be able to save money but still have records to show if needed.
