Default how did you pick your vet?

Im starting to doubt my local vet, the surgery is clean and when I first took the dogs in they were fine with them, but earlyer in the year I had a guinnea pig who was very ill but they couldnt tell me the cause, I do understand that theres not an answer for everything, and the vet was very nervous as it was her first day, she also wasnt too good on her english, my guinnea pig died a few hours later, but I can understand that some desieses cannot really be treated although she thought he hurt is back, i was pretty sure he had contracted a desiese..but im not the vet!

Since then iv been trying to book my junior in to get neutered, they told me I had to have a check up first, understandable I thought, so booked me in for yesterday, when I turn up I found out it was actually for the operation and there was no check up?! very mis-informing, I feel like they are just trying to push Junior onto the operating table to get the money from me they are also quick to get me off the phone if I call with a question or get me out the door if I pop in to ask something, Its not like I go in asking questions about every little sneeze they have, infact I dont ever really call...!!

Sorry for the rant it just annoyed me a bit, How do you pick a good vet? theres always mixed word of mouth..

Always shop around when you're looking for a vet (much like any business don't just accept one for the sake of it) ask lots of questions? Ask them how many Chihuahua's they have on their books, try and find a small animal specialist in your area they strangely tend to be very good with chihuahua's as well. If possible try and find one which is a veterinary hospital as opposed to just a surgery as they often run emergency clincs and are 24 hours, you always find if your dog is going to hurt itself it's almost always either a Sunday or around midnight.

Just remember if you don't like their service walk away there are plenty of vets out there you just need to find the right one for you. Also ask over the local park when you see people as to where they take their dogs, you can't get a better recommendation than word of mouth Also the RCVS I believe has a list on their website of practices they recognise so possibly start there

EDIT: I forgot to say how we found ours, lets just say we shopped around a lot and our actual vet is within 10 minutes, one of the vets is a leading expert on guinea pigs and small animals (she was a godsend when Zero fractured his back leg) they also have very close links with RCVS and have many a chihuahua on their books and our emergency vet is Stone Lion Hospital which I've also found to be an extremely good practice not to mention the place is huge and it's open 24/7.

When we moved to this area, we left our long time vet whom we loved. We didn't know any of the vets here and asked around - getting some information on each.

We then took out the phone book (as I am not one to just go by word of mouth) and called each clinic. We asked some general questions like:

What are your hours?
How many vets to you have on staff?
Do you have emergency after hours?
Do the vets have extensive experience with Chihuahuas?
Do you offer multi-pet discounts?

We then set up a time to go to each clinic for a tour and meet/greet with the vet(s). We looked for cleanliness, efficient/friendly service, comfortable waiting room (if you have ever had a seriously ill pet you will understand the need for that), general breed/animal knowledge from vet about nutrition, alternative vaccination schedules etc and attitude towards altering the "standard" - we also look for vets with ethics. We found some vets in our area didn't support the local SPCA or rescue groups. We also found that others did and one in particular helped out with the injured wildlife that was found in the city for the Province's Wildlife Dept.

So after all the visits, we sat and discussed all the information we had and then decided on our vet. We haven't looked back.

Many of the vets where I live have websites. They gave all the information I could need, lots of pictures, and even a virtual tour on one site. You should always call the vets and ask questions too. I read reviews online too. That's how I made my choice. I was really impressed by the cleanliness and the great staff when I first visited my current vet as well. It was a pretty easy choice for me.
