Default How much am I meant to feed him

Ok, I'm confused

My large dogs are fed on Burns which is a quality kibble, they are fed exactly the right amount of food for their weight, which is pretty easy. I hate seeing fat overweight dogs, it drives me up the wall!!!

I'm really confused with how much food to give the little fella. I bought a bag of Royal Canin as that's what the breeder was feeding him, I will keep him on this until he can move onto adult food at which time I will gradually switch to Burns.

On the bags of Burns it gives you a specific amount of food for the weight of your dog, the Royal Canin doesnt, it's just full of rubbish that makes no sense what so ever.

Can anyone shed any light at all???

Regards,

Confused from Birtley

not sure which one you are feeding but there is a recommended daily intake on their website http://www.royalcanin.co.uk/my_pet/d...ni_junior.aspx

How much does Madi weigh? I give Tango just a tad under 1/4 cup twice a day. He weighs just under 4 lbs.....3.9 lbs to be exact. That portion is keeping him at a healthy size/weight.

I'm feeding Jazz the same amount, but spread over 3 feedings a day. She's still a puppy, 3 1/2 months old, 2lbs 3ozs at last weigh-in 2 weeks ago. I leave the food down for 15 minutes before I take it away. She usually goes at it pretty quickly, but walks away when there's still a bit left. At her age with so much growing still to do, I want to make sure she gets enough, but not not be able to eat obsessively (which she's shown no signs of.)

Smashy, I'm not trying to hijack your thread, but I wanted you to have a couple of examples of quantity versus size/weight versus age, to hopefully help lessen your confusion.

Madi is between 5 and 1/2 and 6 lbs. we still feed her a bit of soft food, too. we aren't feeding her a lot, because she still gets treats for going potty, training, etc, and we don't want to give her too much. She usually eats all her hard food by the end of the day

No problem Tinks

Ok, here is some clarification direct from Royal Canin. Little fella (12 weeks old) is just under 2lbs, they have told us his daily intake should be 55g. I guess this will vary depending what brand you are using.

Willy will be 7 months on the 31st and he eats 1/2 cup throughout the day, spread between a few feedings and 1/2 a small container of wet food , it probably works out to be 2 small spoons of it. He gets half of the dry in the morning, then half way through the day he gets the wet then around dinner or slightly after he gets the rest of the dry. When he was younger he ate about half of those portions. At last check Willy was 3 pounds 9 oz

I give Willy the wet every day because he is such a skinny boy!! He looks like he could stand to gain a bit of weight. Now mind you he doesn't always eat all of that food, sometimes he will leave some in the bowl and some days he doesn't eat any of the wet food. I guess he depends on how hungry he is.

I don't free feed because I wasn't taught to do that when I got Rosa. And Willy does well with the sch feedings. My friend who has a chi leaves the food down all day, her Chi is not a big eatter and he has had a hypoglasema (sp?? lol) spell so she is afraid to give sch foods, nor should she really as food should be given to him round the clock just incase.

lol anyway, that was my 2 cents worth and more, as usual hehehe

It CAN get so confusing as to how much to give them and I stumbled along with it for the first bit. And now having said all that....a chi is gonna eat what a chi wants to eat...you can't force them lol so in alot of ways....they set how much they want to eat lol
