Default ATTENTION all people with LOTS of dogs lol ;-)

Ok, and now the questions begin. AHEM!! I just wanted to ask those of you who have 3 or more dogs....how do they all get along? I guess that since we've had so many issues with Willy that I am not even all that certain how 2 dogs get along lol They have been separated so much that when they are allowed together they are all PLAY, they run around and play fight, there is no sleeping together for naps lol its just PLAY TIME lol

I DID read somewhere that its not a good idea to have alot of dogs and that it changes how they are....as in I guess they are more agressive or more like a pack. I dunno what to think so I thought who better to ask then my experts with lots of dogs lol You know who you are! lol

Hello Well I have 6 dogs. They right now are sleeping right next to each other. Like keeping each warm. I have never had a problem introducing a puppy to my others. The female dogs instantly took over the mothering roll. Cleaning faces ears and even butts. The males run and check on a noisy baby to make sure it's ok. They all play nice and guard the yard together. They will all eat out of the same plate at the same time, no fighting. Maybe I am just blessed but no problems here. Oh I sould say I have 1 6 year old male. 1 4 year old male. 1 4 year old female. 1 3 year old female. 1 10 months old male. And finally 1 3 month old female.

For dogs, as pack animals.. they tend to accept newbies okay (better than say, cats).

First of all, YOU need to be alpha. If you're not, a new pup -will- add problems.

Second, you need to let them decide who's the boss next - it's a natural progression. In our house, our eldest is still alpha - followed by second eldest - and so on. I can see though, that the third in command has eyes for lead position (and he will rule with an iron paw!) and I will not stop him if he chooses to try for lead. It's natural! As the lead dog gets old/weak/etc (or cat in this case) the younger members of the pack/pride will try and take over. You just have to make sure they all see you as #1 dog.

I think pack mentality kicks in worse for people who have alot of dogs and just leave them in their yard and dont walk or train them.
My 3 get on great. However when I tried to introduce a larger breed male puppy it was a disaster. I have since decided that Adam would not appreciate another male dog around. Luckily the girls get on great, even so I wouldnt introduce another unless I was sure neither of them developed a dominant personality.
Oddly though they dont ever sleep together, unless its all together on my lap. Maybe they will in the cold weather, huddle up for warmth!!LOL

It's only a bad idea to have a lot of dogs if you're not a good pack leader. I'm not saying you are or are not and I'm not saying those who are not pack leaders are "bad" or anything but you can not have "a lot" of dogs, not be a pack leader & not expect to have troubles amongst your pack. If you are a good pack leader - you could have a pack of 20 dogs & everything be a-okay.

Having 5 Chi's....all with different personalities, confidence levels, etc - they get along great. I do find myself to be a good pack leader. They listen to me, don't fight with one another & apparently accept newbies very well. hehe I love being able to have my Chi's ALL in my lap w/o anyone getting bent out of shape. You have to treat them all the same. I do have an issue with my husband favoring Matilda & I've tried & tried to get him to understand how imporant it is to treat them all the same. He loves & spoils them all but he's always had a soft spot for her as she was our first & she is who made HIM fall in love with the breed (he is someone who has never been a dog person so that for him was huge!). It does effect her in it makes her run to him & basically "hide" if I'm trying to correct her. She will also chase any others away from him at times - not in a nasty way but almost playful like - she still accomplishes what she wants no less. The biggest difference it makes is when he's around, she won't settle down with the pack, as a group as often as when he is not. When he's around, she has a bigger job to do...be HIS pack leader. LOL (as a matter of fact hubby is home now & I have 4 Chi's in my lap - ha! Miss Matilda is laying on the floor by the kitchen door where the hubster is...)

At any rate - all & all they get along great and I wouldn't change it for the world. However, if I wasn't a good pack leader I'd really hate to see how my pack would act. LOL

I at one time had 10 chis and like Mchis said if your not a good pack leader then nothing will go right, no one will listen .

Yes i have a few figths , just had one 3 nights ago with jasper not wanting to move from Jemini's sleeping spot . She put him in his place a little rougher than i'd like but he learned . She's Under me for the females Jamoka is under Her for the males.

Everyone has to know there place in the pack for owning alot of dogs to work ...good luck
