Default How Much To Feed?

Hello Chihuahua People!

First a quick note: Daisy & Zoey have fully recovered from whatever was ailing them that I had talked about in previous posts! Yay I have my happy girls back to normal!! <3 Big thanks to those who responded to my posts -- I apologize if they were kind of annoying. ;D

I have a question now regarding how much to feed them. For the longest time I had been free-feeding them so they could eat whenever they were hungry.. but since I've switched to a different and better food (their insides seem to really process the food so much better than the previous food!) I've been starting to measure out their food and feed them twice a day. First of all, should I be feeding three times? How do you guys do it? Everyone is different I know.. but any advice or pointers is greatly appreciated. Also, the back of their dog food suggests feeding 1/2 cup or a bit more a day. So their meals have been 1/4 cup per... but is that enough or is it too much? Daisy is bigger than Zoey, about 6-7 pounds and Zoey is about 3 pounds. I just want to make sure they are well fed and are not over-eating or starving. I get so worried! Haha.

Yay long posts. Hope I didn't bore ya to death!! Thanks for reading !

I feed mine Orijen and it also says to feed 1/2 cup a day, but I actually feed mine less. Pepper is a little chub so they get a "snack" in the morning--a very small amount of kibble and then each get a 1/4 cup at night. It seems to work well for them. I was worried it wasn't enough, but they don't rush to eat or anything and I know with a high protein food they don't need to eat as much of it. I don't think your dogs would need to eat 3 times a day. You'll be able to tell in time what's the right amount for them. Glad to hear they are feeling better!

how old are they again? u never go by the bag amount lol...they often make your pup chubs i used to feed mine 3 times a day until the day he let me know he only wants 2...which is the day he stopped eating as much..it used to be 1/4 a cup...and still is free fed through a automatic feeder which measures out 1/4 cup at the 3 times i set it to.

Pigeon, Daisy is 5 years old and Zoey is 2 years old.

I don't want them to be chubby!! Hehe.. Daisy kind of chubbed out once Zoey came into her life. Emotional eater maybe? haha.. :P

I will definitely feed them a bit less I think because to me it seems like an awful lot and sometimes they don't finish what I give them. That should have been the first clue. Doh

Tango's 2 1/2, years old, 3.9 lbs. He gets fed twice a day, just a tad under one quarter cup each feeding, for a total of almost 1/2 a cup a day. If I've been doing a lot of training, and giving him treats, then he gets less. He's at a perfect weight.

Jazz is still a puppy, and smaller than Tango for the moment. She's 2 1/2 lbs right now. I give her the same amount as Tango. She's lost the big puppy belly, and now is quite lean, and very healthy. I'll adjust her intake as she grows. For the moment, the amount seems to be right for her, though I watch closely to make sure she's not packing on any extra weight. I've been thinking of cutting back Tango just a bit, because about half the time he doesn't quite finish all his food, which tells me he doesn't need it.
