Default Keeping Chi away from cat food?

So we have a 14 year old, 14 pound cat that doesn't jump...at all. The cat's food is kept in the kitchen laundry closet which is through a door in the kitchen. We also have a fence that keeps both the dog and cat out of the kitchen. Basically when the cat meows at the kitchen fence we open it for her, she walks into the kitchen and then in through the laundry door where her dry food is at. Then we try our best to remember to close the fence for her when she leaves the kitchen.....

Do things always run this smoothly? No. My wife and I go in and out of the kitchen of course opening and reopening the fence. When we leave the kitchen we sometimes forget to close the fence. So sometimes when we walk away we sometimes forget to shut the fence to the kitchen.

Any ideas? Right now the cat's food is on a tv tray in the laundry room in hopes that the cat will meow when she wants her food. Then the food is back down when the puppy is in his kennel...while we are at work or during the night.

Any electronic gadgets out there? Maybe a collar the cat can wear to open a door? We've seen a few but the doors seem so small for our fat cat.

When I had a cat way back when, I would put the food bowl on top of the dryer or a shelf in the laundry room
