Default Behaviour problems. Marking, barking and the stuff.

I got my chi, Gabi for about 2 years ago off the internet, from Spain (yeah, kinda hate myself for that) On the other hand, I doubt anyone else that would be airheaded enough to buy a dog off net would be as patient with her.

She has two main problems, and they are probably there at least partly because of what I did and didn't.
The first is that she barks and acts aggressively at people and dogs she doesn't know. She doesn't try to bite, just barks and howls and runs around them. A couple of times I've seen her try to (and sometimes succeed) to bite people's heels. She barks so loud that I have troubles hearing what people are trying to say to me.
This doesn't happend when we are out at the mall or at the railroad station, where there are a lot of people, but when we're out for a walk and meet people one on one- the hell is loose. She can walk with me without a leash, see a person, bark at him/ her, and then, after I call at her a couple of time, she comes after me (this usually happends when we're at a place where there are not many people)

The second is that she marks inside. Not at home, but at my husband's parents' place (imagine how popular I am there..). They have a dog too. She is mainly housebroken, with som glitches from time to time. Mainly, she does the thing outside and in the cat's litter box.

I love her, but these things make our life harder than necessary.

I'v tried clickertraining, dominating behaviour, just plain trainig, lifting her up... it has become better with time, but is still really annoying.
Socialising with her is difficult, because she seems afraid of bigger dogs, and there is not many of "our" size around here. Also, many people are not patient enough to let her be and let her come to them, whoch only makes it worse.

I would really appreciate some good advice from you guys.

You could take her to a professional dog training program where they can help you with basic commands such as come etc. and some of them even help with aggressive behaviour and barking. Also if she isn't spayed and that is the reason she is marking you may want to get her spayed.

Well, in Norway spraying of healthy dogs is prohibited. We were out today for a walk without the leash and she behaved brilliantly. So from now on we're walking more and maybe that'll help.

Welcome to the board

Spaying dogs is prohibited? Wow, I didnt realize it was banned in some places, interesting.

As for the barking issues, she may think she is protecting you? I would try to calm her and when she is quiet give her a treat. If someone walks up to her and wants to talk to you or pet her then have them give her a treat. Hopefully soon she will relate treats and rewards to meeting new people. Also never pick her up or coddle her when she is barking and growling at people.

As for the marking, I am sure she is marking the territory at your parents house because there is another dog. I would not allow her free reign of the house when you are there, tether her to you so you can watch her and if she goes to mark then I would use a spray bottle to stop her before she does it. Also make sure you get the scent up with something so she will not smell it and continue to mark the same places. Does your parents dog mark the house to?

Hope this helps.

Well, today we were out and met two old ladies. She barked two times, I said "hush" and she got still. So I talked to the ladies while giving her treats (they were a step away, and she would never jsut stay calmly and eat in a situation like that before, so she got a lot of praise for that) after that we got to a park and I removed the leash. We walked for sometime, met some strangers which she almost ignored and a little girl aged 7 or something. Gabi barked two or three times, I hushed her and she got quiet. And than! i talked to the girl while giving gabi treats, and that the little girl gave her treats, and she took them! It was amasing!
I'm so happy with the progress. I think she was sensing my insecurity before, and maybe the presence of the treats had an impact, but I'm SO satisfyed

Their dog do not mark, but I will try giving Gabi enough exercise and being a good leader and see if it helps.

I agree that the aggressive behavior could be that she is "protecting" you from these potentially dangerous things.

I don't know if it is something that could be done with strangers, but when we have people or animals come over to visit at our house we have our dogs see us touch and say nice things to the new people/animals so that they know that we are okay with them being there.

Good luck, hopefully she will continue on her good streak!
