Thumbs down Peeing beside his toilet - help!

Hiya,

I've got a 5 month old Chihuahua who was part litter trained when we got him. He's been really good in peeing/pooing in his toilet but has recently started peeing beside it!
The toilet is a litter tray with newspaper in it. I've started putting newspaper beside the tray to prevent the pee going on the floor but am worried this will only encourage him to pee there.

Any suggestions?

Thanks

Welcome to the board!

Hmmm? I wouldnt put the newspaper down outside of it as it will probably confuse him and encourage a new habit. Every time he misses his tray I would get the urine up with a paper towel and then blot inside his litter tray with the urine on the paper towel so the scent will be there. Are you using pee pads or newspaper for your litter tray? If you are using newspaper then you need to switch to pee pads. If you are using pee pads have you changed the brand lately? If so then you could have a brand that doesnt have a good urine scent on it? Some are weaker than others. I get mine at Walgreens and have a good price. As for the pooing, some Chi's do not like to urinate and deficate in the same area so I have known people to have a litter box and a pee pad tray so they will urinate in one and deficate in the other.

I hope this helps

Good suggestion Michelle.
Bella also did this a couple months ago when she was younger. She would go onto the pee-pad, do circles, and then step off of it and go. It was so frustrating!! I would just watch her in the act of it (if I was around) and hurry up and pick her up and put her on it. I know that is unrealistic to do all the time, but I made sure to keep a keen eye out for her to do it again, so I could show her where to go. But as Yoshi's Mom said, make sure you are using pee-pads and not just newspaper. The pads have the scent on it which atracts them and that is why she recommended rubbing the paper towel with the urine on it to the pee-pad. My mom has a Chihuahua and after she got used to where the pee-pad was and was about a year old, my mom switched to just using newspaper, but that is after she was familiar with how it worked. I don't think the pee-pads are too bad those cost-wise, so I am just going to stick with them.

Good luck!

Thanks for your replies. I've been using newspaper in the tray. I'll buy some pads after work today and hopefully they will help keep him to the right spot!

Thanks!

He is at an age when he might be lifting his wee leg...that can cause a near miss on the piddle tray !!

I've still never seen him lift his leg, but this morning I did notice that he had mainly poo'd in his tray and pee'd on the floor beside it. Do you think I should get another tray to put beside the current one? It could maybe be that he doesn't wanna pee/poo in the same place..

You can try another tray beside it and if that doesnt work then get a litter box and use some litter. They can be strange and need to go on something different at times.
