Question Cant seem to house train, help!!

Ok let me start with these two dogs weren't mine, my old roommate left them here when he moved out. For the most part for the two years she had them they were left in a room all day, the peed, pooped, chewed, etc and were not trained at all. Essentially they were neglected. I have been trying to house train them, praising when they go outside and I've been taking my lunch from work to let them out so they never go more than a few hours workout going out. Sometimes they go outside, but it seems most of the time they just go in their crate (it's a huge crate it was our boxers) I'm at a loss of what else to do, often they will come in from being outside for as long as an hour and run into one of the bedrooms and poop. I have never had a small dog before so Im open to any suggestions!!

Ugh, what a jerk. I just can't understand some people. Thank you for taking those two dogs on, though I know it's frustrating to have house breaking issues.

You ought to consider getting 2 separate small crates that's only big enough for them to turn around in. When I first had Stella, I kept her in a larger pen, which she started peeing in. When I moved her into something smaller, she hasn't had a problem. When they're in smaller area, they won't be as apt to soil it!

Also, it's important to get them on a set schedule. Don't deviate from this schedule at all for the first several weeks (or longer). The consistency really helps them learn.

When bringing them out, I'd go out with them and watch. If they don't go, bring them back to their crate, and try again every half hour until they do. When they come inside, do NOT let them out of your site. Someone once gave me the awesome suggestion to hook the dog's leash to your belt so they can't sneak off. If you catch them in the act, say "No!" and bring them outside. If they potty outside, praise them like there's no tomorrow.

Some Chis are harder to train than others (mine has an absolute nightmare to house train), but be patient and consistent. It will pay off. Good luck!

And by the way, welcome to the forum!

What Nicole said is exactly right! I am a believer in crate training. I would suspect since they are older and not used to being confined or disciplined, it may take longer. But it will definitely be worth it. It's surprising, but one day they all of a sudden "get it!"

I am transitioning my 21 month old from pee pads to totally outside. It's been 13 days without any mishaps. Today, after work, I took him out, he peed and I knew he had to poop also, but he wouldn't. So we came in and not 30 seconds later he was looking where his pee pad was, then at me. So I asked if he wanted to go out and he ran to the door!

Maybe you can try Poochie Bells! I just got some, but I take Angel out every 2-3 hours anyway so they dont help me too much, but you hang them by the door they go out and teach them to jingle the bells when they need to out!

It' not easy, but don't give up!
