Default Eating Habit

Pepper has decided she needs to eat all her food as fast as possible. And by eat I mean inhale. She gets 1/8 cup twice a day and just recently has started inhaling the whole thing in about 2 seconds! Today I gave her Acana to see if the bigger pieces would slow her down but it made no difference. They eat Fromm because pepper had soft poop on Acana which I think might have been because I was over feeding ( going to test that out). She doesn't chew not one piece. I also tried giving her piece by piece, she just swallowed each one.

Next feeding I'm going to try to put water in her bowl with her food. Does anyone else have suggestions in case that doesn't slow her down?

Also, will this eventually hurt her if I can't break her of that?

Gemma eats her food pretty fast as well and she doesn't tend to chew up most pieces. When I'm feeding Acana, I put quite a bit of water in her bowl so that the kibbles are floating in it. It makes it easier for her to digest with all the water.

You say you were feeding Pepper 1/8 cup twice per day with Acana? I feed the same to Gemma (I take a few kibbles out of each 1/8 serving) and she is only 2.7 lbs and almost 7 months and she poops so much. I wonder if I am overfeeding her, too? Would love to hear if anyone has advice about this for both of us. I thought 1/4 cup was so little per day but maybe since she is so small she needs even less. It could be the same for Pepper! How much does she weigh?

When I was feeding her 1/4 cup twice a day of Fromm, her poop was ok but she pooped about 6 times a day. When I went down to 1/8, she pooped way less. Poops were small and firm.

When I switched to Acana feeding 1/4 cup she Pooped about 6 times a day her poops were very very soft and HUGE! I am experimenting to see if her poops get better feeding 1/8 cup 2x a day.

She is 3.1 lbs and is 15 weeks old

Babi, Angel does the very same thing! He inhales his food. He too, gets 1/8 cup 2x per day. My golden chews every piece of food, ugghh!! She eats 3/4 cup 2x per day! I have to wait for her to finish so Angel doesn't steal her food.

Caitlin, Angel weighs 9lbs and he gets about 1/3 cup per day. I give THK in the AM and Wellness Core in the PM He gets a few treats during the day, but not much. I can't seem to keep him under 9lbs! I dont want him to be a rolly polly! lol

Babi, I wish I knew how to slow down the eating. As with you, if I feed him one piece at a time, he just swallows it! I put water in his bowl - he doesn't care, he still inhales everything! Treats. . .now he will chew his treats!! Sometimes I will put his food in a treat toy, such as (I don't know what it is called, but it looks like a flyer saucer and its purple) It's adjustable to different size foods and comes apart for cleaning. With that, I adjust so that it gives one or two pieces at a time. It works great, but I forget about it a lot!! Oh well!

I am also going to try to feed the dogs at different times in case pepper is tying to hurry to go get some of Lilys. She just started this!

Lily also weighs 9lbs.

Her Acana poops sounds exactly like Gemma's now. I bet it's just a matter of feeding too much. Definitely try cutting her down to 1/8c twice per day. 1/4c twice per day does sound like way too much for a pup her size. I think I might even cut Gemma back to around 1/5c total per day since 1/4c seems to make her poop so much. She's just so tiny and seems to manage the same weight with what I'm feeding now, so I worry about her losing any weight.

I am wondering if Gemma needs less than 1/4c per day. If Angel is 9lbs and he eats 1/3c per day, it seems like Gemma should eat less than 1/4c per day weighing less than 3lbs. But I'm not sure about the difference in nutrition in each of the foods and how much is necessary. Maybe you have to feed more of THK and Wellness than Acana.

There are special bowls that prevent this, they have like a maze inside of them whereby the dog has to move around slowly because it can't get it's whole head in there to gobble (inhale). Worked a treat for my Mastiffs, just wish I could get the Chi's to eat anything when I put it down, grrr.

Yes, what Dee said. They look like this:

Probably won't help though if your Chi is eating piece by piece already but just swallowing each piece whole. That's what Gemma does. I see it being effective though if your dog is gobbling down multiple pieces at once.
