Default Why has this happened?

So rupert is 5 and a half months and at the weekend he attempted to hump my hand and later on that day he marked outside. So not messing about on Tuesday he had his tesicles removed. He is very sore and very sorry for himself and even in his little state he has just tried to hump my hand again. I thought, naively, as this wouldn't happen. He isn't in the habit of doing it as he only tried the once! Also for the first time he had his little 'lipstick' out! Is this all connected? My pug Hugo has been done and never marked or humped and he even pees like a girl!

Umm, I am going to just throw this out there based on years of having other types of dogs. Rupert is a boy, it is kind of what they do fixed or not (humping). You can discourage the behavior by distracting him or changing his focus when the "activity" starts, but it cannot be in a mean or punishing way for he is only doing what comes natural. I would however not allow him under any circumstances to hump on you or any other human, it is just rude doggy behavior. However, take note, humping is not always a sexual thing. A lot of the time humping is a show of dominance. Males and Females do this.

Now as for the peeing, again he is a boy and it is kind of what they do. When they raise their leg, it is just a sign of maturity.

I also HOPE that you did not have him fixed as a form of punishment. You say that he is "very sorry for himself" that concerns me a bit.

How mean would that be to punish him!!?? What an odd suggestion. I was going to have him done anyway when he was 6 months so it was only 2 weeks earlier. I have only ever had Hugo and rupert and had no dogs before or interacted with any dogs so I have no experience. As I said Hugo pees squating he's never lifted his leg and he is 2 now so I thought neutered boys squat!!

Here, you may find these links interesting.

Humping is Normal, Yet Rude and Lewd | Dog Star Daily

That behavior is very normal and can be modified. Most of my dogs are intact with only one neutered male (and one soon to be). My neutered male is the worst of the bunch. I've also had the occasional humping female and know someone who's female did it so often, she cued it as a trick and now the dog does it on command - which actually works because nobody asks for that particular trick so the behavior seems to be fading. lol

I have a two year old male that has recently sired a litter, he still does the stretch to pee thing (which makes him 'miss' and gt his front foot :/), very seldom hikes his leg. Some dogs do, some dogs don't. I have two females that attempt to hike/mark as well. I think it's more personality/temperament than gender, really.

Sorry, my wording may be a little harsh. But in your original post you said he attempted to hump your hand once and then he lifted his leg to mark outside once over the weekend so not messing around you had his testicles removed on Tuesday. It just sounds as though you made him have this surgery for doing normal things that if are indeed unwanted behavior issues can be corrected with gentle change of focus. For most dogs, if they are humping a clap of your hands or a firm verbal no will cause them to stop. If he is doing it on a person, he needs to be put on the ground and walked away from and ignored for a few minutes (no talk, no touch, no eye contact) and he will get the message that if he does this behavior you will not reward him by being with him.

I would also caution you in that as you are his owner that you need to be the alpha dog of his pack. If he is attempting to hump your hand or anywhere else on your body he may be telling you that you are not the leader of the pack. He could be showing you that in his mind he is more dominant than you.

I understand that yes he needs to be fixed and that it was already planned for a few weeks from now so really then or now it doesn't make that much of a difference. It just came across as you had this done immediately as a form of punishment to make him sorry he did these things.

Every dog is different. We got Simcha as a rescue dog, and he had been neutered a couple of weeks previously at 1 year and 6 months. He has never humped anything or shown any sexualized behavior in our three months of living with him. When he is wrestling, playing tug-of-war or play fighting, occasionally he shows a trace of his 'lipstick' (actually I always thought of it as the pimento poking out the end of an olive), but never a serious erection. He is otherwise very male aggressive, and will, for example, lift up his leg and mark after an outdoors encounter with another dog resulting in mutual barking and other displays of dominance. His other maleness attribute is an extreme territoriality. He patrols the front of the house through three window locations, and will bark if any person or dog passes by. He then runs to us, and seems to quiet down when we pet him and thank him for having saved us from the deadly intruder.

Thanks for all the replys, for what I am understanding it's more to do with personality and behaviour than anything else. I thought he was too young to know what he was doing and assumed it was because he hadnt been done. I didn't realise that girls could hump each other!!

Hm, that's not how it came across to me. Humping and marking can be classic signs of a dog hitting puberty, especially considering the dogs age. I would of probably made an appointment for a neuter too.
