Red face Weird butt behavior..

Ok..this is a funny question about a behavior I have just noticed.

Whenever we go on walks (daily) my girl is usually scared most of the time and doesnt do all that well because she will take a few steps..smell her butt..take more smell her butt...whirling around over and over and over. She is pee pad trained, she doesn't go outside.

When at home she doesnt do this. The only time she will do this is if she gets startled or decides its time for her to bark at something she hears (not a usual occurance).

What is this weird butt sniffing thing? To me, she doesnt smell of anything than her dog shampoo or of the wipes we clean her paws with. Can it be an anal gland thing? I dont smell anything though. The vet did fix her anal glands in July. Whew! That was a stink she didn't have before.

Why is she walking and sniffing like that? I never saw a dog do that.

I have no idea what that is, but your title made me laugh! Since you brought it up though, how do you know if their anal glands need to be expressed?

Melissa, My older Chi leaks, and it's stinky, but usually when you get them groom they will express the glands on a regular basis or as needed so you don't have any troubles, and also they can tell by feeling and sometimes by looking as it's not necessary every visit.

My bloodhound does this when she is nervous and gassy. Sometimes she will audibly toot and quick do that and other times I don't hear anything but she will do it. It's not very lady like and most of the time I cannot smell it hardly at all but their noses are much better than ours.

My little Sandy does that, sometimes when she gets excited. I think when she is excited she must pass gas and has to check to see what it was! But she sniffs and turns circles really fast and growls.

Haha some dogs are more "refined" than others. This topic alone makes me laugh!

Well, that not weird!! Angel does that! When I see him sniffing his butt, 98% of the time, if not 100%, he has to poop! I give him time and he WILL poop!

He is pee pad trained, but I have taken them away and want him to use outdoors! So, when I see him sniff his butt, I take him out and he poops! Not always immediately, but eventually.

But, yeah, it is kind of strange, but maybe she's signaling that she needs to go potty!
