Smile My little Love

Hello my friends, it has been a few month since I joined this VERY INFORMATIVE forum and wonderful community and I would like to share my incredible experience of rescuing my dog.

After much thinking, debating and pondering, I had finally decided to adopt a dog last year.
My plans on waiting until after Christmas 2012 where blown right out the door when I walked into our Petco to get bird food.
A local rescue organization was there with several dogs for adoption.
I IMMIDIATELY zoned in on this beautiful little Chihuahua female, something just did not allow me to walk past her.
After talking to my boyfriend, I decided to go ahead and bring her home.

It was the best decision that I have made in a long time
She is just about five and a half years old now. After pondering names, the name Bijou (saw it here on the forum ) was just plain and simple the best fit!

I feel like I drew the jack pot with her! She walks on the leash like a dream, she is kennel trained and she does not bark the apartment building down when she hears neighbors coming and going! She is very well behaved and does approach strangers that are not immediately in her face (she shies away from them).

Looking at her paperwork, it looks like she came from a California (LA area) high kill shelter where she was surrendered by her owners.
I do not know what prompted the owners to surrender her, but it was the best decision for me to adopt her.
She has been found healthy after her vet visit and has now gained close to a pound to be a perfect 5.5lbs.
She has brought pure joy into my life and has been extremely helpful to get me going again after a major surgery earlier in 2012.

I feel so much joy and gratitude when I look at her, I just wanted to share my experience here.

Thank you for all the information here on this forum. I feel that it has been essential in helping me make an informed decision when I filled out the adoption papers.

Margit and Bijou

Bijou has lots and lots of good years left in her, and you will have the pleasure of enjoying them all together. Nearly all of us who have adopted rescue dogs find ourselves wondering why anybody would ever have given them up.

You know joeandruth, I have wondered about that as well. The previous owner surrendered her to the shelter with her one-week old puppies.
Considering that she was not fixed and that she growled at me in the beginning when I touched her while she was eating or when I wanted to claim a bully stick from her, does make me wonder though.
She learned pretty quickly to NOT growl while eating and she surrenders her bully stick to me now without fuss. She seems to do very well with boundaries, rules and limitations (yes, I watch the Dog Whisperer ). She is playful, relaxed and easy going, which makes me believe that she is happy and will be so for many, many, many years to come!

Margit
