Default Potty training?

I have a 9 week old chihuahua and I really want to potty train him so he doesn't go in the house. My problem is he doesn't get his first set of shots till the end of this week and I'm really tired of picking up poop. I have him in a play area closed off just for him and his crate which I keep in that area with his door open at all times so he can go in and out to potty. He's been going on a blanket I have set up for him, he has always popped on this blanket never anywhere else (only because I watch him whenever I take him out and I know when he needs to go potty, he usually starts sniffing around a lot. So when I see that I put him on the blanket and he goes right away) but when it comes to peeing, he has gone on the carpet when I take him out to play and on my bed but only a few times, it's mostly always on the blanket I just watch for his signs and put him on the blanket when I think he needs to go. When he does to on the blanket I praise him like crazy and he starts wagging his tail happily then I let him out to play even more. So my question is, I know I shouldn't take him outside u too he has his shots but I'm worried he's getting used to going in his personal play area on this blanket. Should I try training pads? Or take him outside to an area where I know no dogs have been? He is my first puppy ever and I want to train him right. Thank you for any feed back and also reading this long post!

I would try the puppy pads, definitely. IMO, if you want to designate that blanket as his potty, then you're doing a great job and doing the right thing I think. Your baby is at the perfect age to learn. Not sure I personally would want that as his potty area (a blanket) but of course that is up to you I think. I wouldn't think it would be too much different for him to learn the pads though as opposed to the blanket. But keep in same area and keep him confined as he grows and learns. Read more of the posts on here, they are very helpful too. I've noticed many start their pups in a cage with a potty area on one side and food/bed in a little area on the other. Beyond that I don't know. That's where I am stuck! LOL

I replied to you since you replied to me. Again best of luck. Puppies are so fun but do take some work. And you seem to be doing a great job, mama!
