Default Growling Puppy

Gumdrop is only 10 weeks old - we got her 2 weeks ago - and is doing so well with all of her adjusting and training. She is very sweet and affectionate. But in the last week, she has growled at my husband 3 times, and myself 2 times, when we try to pick her up. We are not hurting her, she is just showing a little "sass" . We need to nip this in the bud and stop this unacceptable behavior.

When she growls she has been either wanting something badly (to get into a room), or was sleeping, or is excited (had been playing crazily and it's time to go home). In other words, she is making little spoiled puppy complaints - like a little tantrum.

Anyone who knows how to deal with this kind of unacceptable puppy aggression, please let us know.

Everytime she does it, I'd say NO NO NO, that's not nice. Would love to see a video to know for sure, but puppies start growling at this stage, especially when playing which isn't being spoiled. It's just how puppies learn self confidence. Make sure that the growling is truly unwanted behavior and you know why she's growling in order to know whether or not the behavior needs to be stopped.

Growling is a dog's way of saying 'please stop what you are doing'! If you have to wake her up, talk to her first. Train her to accept being picked up with a little tiny treat you give her. LOTS of chi's do not like being picked up. Can you sit down on the floor, or have stairs up to the couch? Then you could pick her up that way. We are GIANTS to them, remember!
