Default Another thread on chi aggression :-)

So this may get a lil bit long.. I apologize in advance..
Let me start this out by giving y'all the background on our story..
We brought Gizmo home a year ago, he was a birthday gift for my oldest daughter.. I pushed for a tortoise.. My husband thought a puppy was a better idea :-/ we had a 9 yr old Aussie shep/blk lab mix already (sadly he passed away very unexpectedly 4 months later). Anyways initially Gizmo was very attached to my daughter but that has gradually shifted and he is now bonded to me.. I make his world go round! I love him to death but he is my daughter's dog and she is primarily responsible for him and his care. Anyways, the problem is his aggression towards other members of the family. He has growled and snapped at everyone except my husband and me. This usually happens when he's sitting or cuddling by me and anyone else comes near. When this happens I will say "No!" In a stern voice and remove him from the couch or bed, but it doesn't seem to be helping. The other day my youngest daughter sat down next to me and Gizmo, who wasn't even sitting near me ran up and snapped at her! This time I yelled "Gizmo! No!" It scared the crap out if him because he took off running to the other side of the room and kept his distance from me for a while. He isn't always aggressive towards the kids he does get affectionate and snugly with them but it's usually on his terms. When he is sweet snugly Gizmo I praise the heck out of him. Any other ideas on curbing the aggression would be great, I don't want to have the "lil demon" dog!

He is 'resource guarding' you. He is telling everyone that he 'owns' you! Start out with nothing in life is free programs. Everything he gets, he 'earns'. Sit before he eats, all toys are put away, and you are the 'owner'. He does NOT get up on your bed, lap etc UNLESS you invite him. Same with the kids---make him earn everything. He'll come around when he figures out he is not the boss. Try not to yell at him. Every time he does anything right, praise like mad.

Susan said it very well! I had problems with Angel for about 2 1/2 years! He is now starting to come around and not be so quick to growl and bite! I definitely believe in positive training! I said that wrong, but always reward the good stuff! Much less emphasis on the bad! NILIF is excellent. I did not buy the book, but got quite a bit from the Internet and here!

Also, age has a lot to do with it! They do calm down as they get older! Have you done obedience training with him? It helps an awful lot!
