Default unfriendly chihuahua

The shelter we got Habanero from said he was friendly with dogs and kids. They lied again. He growls at my partner's little sister and runs away and when we bring over the chihuahua puppy we watch at night he tries to snap at her because she's not taking his hints that he wants to be left alone. What should i do?

With your partners sister, how old is she? Is she hyper or rambunctious or overly friendly? How were they introduced? That makes all the difference.

As far as the other dog, is he being aggressive or simply teaching the puppy doggy manners? When he goes after pup, does he just growl and bear teeth? Pin down? That's normal of an older dog teaching a puppy. However, if it's full on aggression, you may want to consult a behaviorist.

Not sure how long you've had him, but sounds like he's scared because of his new home & surroundings. He's also confused to what's going on. If they said he was friendly at the shelter, it was because that was his home that he was used to. Give him time and lots of love and cuddles. He needs to adjust to his new home and surroundings. He doesn't understand what's going on. Do you know his history? Was he abused? Was he raised in the shelter, because that may have been the only life he knew. Give him a safe place to go where the puppy can't bother him. My chi likes to go upstairs to my bed when she wants to be left alone. He may not be used to children and some chis don't like children because they can be wild. My chi don't care for my 8-year old twins because they like to jump around and get crazy which scares my chi. Tell your partner's little sister to talk gently to Habanero.

My partner's little sister is almost 7, she just tries to pet him and he doesn't like it. I've had him since August 26th of this year. The puppy kept following him and playing with his tail which he didn't like at first he warned her but she didn't listen so he snapped at her he didn't hurt her or anything but scared the wits out of her. According to the shelter he's been in two different homes before being turned over to the shelter one was with an older lady and her cats and then the last people was related to the first lady and they had multiple dogs that were bigger than him.

With my twin girls, one of them talks sweet to Midgie and is very gentle petting her and Midgie is ok with it to a certain degree. My other twin is rough and loud and Midgie won't even let her get near her. She growls and shows her teeth which she knows I don't find acceptable. I tell the twin to leave her alone, that she doesn't want to be bothered. Midgie is the same age as my twins and was raised with them; it's just her personality. The puppy is just doing what puppies do and it sounds like Habanero is warning the pup to leave him alone. I would keep a close eye on them when there together, just to make sure the pup doesn't get hurt. I don't think Hab. would hurt the pup, but I would never leave them alone.

The 7 year old needs to ignore him. He doesn't want to be touched. He isn't comfortable enough to be approached by her. If she is calm and ignores him, he may approach her on his own terms. Worth a try. The pup situation doesn't seem like a problem. I'd just watch it, but it sounds like he's just teaching the pup, in my opinion.

My guy loves toddlers and preschoolers who stop moving and sit or squat. He does NOT tolerate those who run up to him. He loves all adults.

I agree with Ashley. Sounds like he's just teaching the pup and given that it's on his territory he's actually being very calm and gentle with the puppy. When my friend brought her puppy round my two had full on growling matches and lunging toward him (and him towards them) before they accepted each other and started playing.

Have the child around but ignore the dog several times. Once he gets used to her presence get her to sit on the floor and put a small treat a safe distance away from her and ignore him until he comes closer to her. Keep moving them closer until he will take the treat from her. Have her give him treats whenever she comes over for a while and I'm sure they'll be best friends before long. He's obviously been through a lot and doesn't know who he can trust and probably doesn't want to get too close to people in case he has to leave again. The big dogs may have been too rough with him so he wants to be left alone for a while but once he gets bored of the space he may seek company. Some dogs aren't fans if children but my chi absolutely adores children so it is definitely not a chi thing. M other chi, Willow is wary of people until she gets to know them and then she is very affectionate...the goes for adults and children. Good luck.
