Default suddenly not so nice to my dog!

Sooooo, Chalupa and Gus (my big red dobe) were getting along smashingly, and then this morning, Chalupa was on my bed next to me and Gus was at the foot. Gus moved his head up the bed a few inches from Chalupa and Chalupa nipped at him!! It didn't get him but what the heck!! Gus just moved back and didn't react. How do I keep this from happening again?

When Chalupa tries this again, instantly make him get off the bed (or sofa or lap or whatever.) Tell him 'off!' firmly, and point to the floor. It is important he makes the decision to get down himself, placing him on the floor is less effective. He is resource guarding, and the resource is you. Only allow him onto places of privilege (all furniture and your lap) at your invitation from now on. As soon as he so much as growls or wrinkles a lip at Gus, he has to go down. He will soon learn that this behaviour loses him what he wants most, which is to be next to you.

I agree. I did just lift my pup down, cause she wouldn't get down from her position on my lap. Kind of sqeezed between me and the chair. After about 3 times, she caught on! Now when she growls, she flattens her ears, cause she knows she's gonna get a gentle tap on her head!

Thanks! I think I will definitely do that if he does it again! The rest of the day he was just fine. So weird!
