Default Pottying in Crate

Taz is 9 months old, he is never potties in the house, but he potties in his crate at night, his crate is big enough for him to stand up and turn around in, it's the smallest dog crate available, he goes into it around 10:30 at night, i always put him outside to potty before i crate him for the night, I let him out aroound 7 in the morning, my husband tries to let him out at 3:30am when he gets up for work, but Taz refuses to come out, I have never had a dog potty in the crate they were sleeping in, I could use some advice on how to stop this or what I'm doing wrong.

I was looking forward to hearing the advice on this. I'm sorry I don't have any, but I'll post so it gets seen again. One question, was he a rescue who was forced to potty in his crate?

Is he peeing or pooing?
If peeing it could be a UTI, so get that checked first. Or he could be marking his bed. Puppy mill pups often use heir bed as a toilet because they grew up not knowing any different.
If he is pooing, he is either desperate to go (changing the times he is fed will help) or very stressed.

He was not a rescue or a puppy mill puppy, I got him from a friend, the mom got an infection and died 2 days after giving birth, the whole litter was hand raised. He is both peeing and pooping, but only in the over night. If I leave the house during the day he will hold it and not potty in the house at all, left him home for 5 1/2 hours the other day and he was fine. At night I put him out to potty before he goes in his crate, but he still potties in his crate at night. Not sure what is going on, he will be 1 the beginning of July.

When do you feed this puppy? I would feed him in the am and early in the pm, and then just a little treat at bedtime. I also would get a much bigger pen/crate and not force him to go in his crate. I use an Iris playpen and it works great.

Have you considered getting a bigger cage and putting a piddle pad right on the inside of it? Or better yet, right in front of his cage. If you put a little of his pee on it, it might be perfect for you. My dog automatically goes in his cage to throw up and stuff, so maybe you dog feels like it's a safe spot to go.

Default Other methods for training

Sometimes an animal can feel insecure in their crate, generally crates are supposed to make them feel comfortable. Sometimes our fur babies could have some kind of infection and this is why accidents happen. There are other methods. You should check them out.

If you don't crate or confine, how do you encourage the dog to use the Piddle Place? Does it have a scent attractant like pee pads do?
