Smile Timmy and I start obedience school tonight!!

We found a obedience school about 15 minutes from the house, they have a very good reputation. We missed the first week, but it all worked out okay (for other reasons). So I'm very excited. Timmy's made such good progress in settling down all ready.

There are handouts and homework every week for 6 weeks. Alot of work, but I'm sure it'll all be very much worth while. my last dog was an amazing golden, who was trained to be a service dog for me. i was spoiled by him. i know what it's like to have a well behaved dog. it was so amazing being part of a team like that. he was happy because he knew what was expected. and he was sooooo happy to work - to help me whenever he could. it was his purpose, and his life was so meaningful. . . i was happy and proud, and everyone around us was just amazed. i miss him so much (*sniff*)

so i'm very motivated to have timmy and i learn to work a a team as well

cross all crossables! we'll keep you posted!

Oh, and our BB is due to arrive thursday - can't wait!!

Good luck with the obedience school. I have brought all my chi's to school. Some did well, some stayed under the chair!

so the first class went very well. i really love the instructors. i've found most of the time that people that are REALLY into dogs and the dog world, tend to not have the best people skills. this instructor last night was wonderful. very down to earth and with a good sense of humor.

the homework is pretty rigorous - at least 20-30 minutes 2x day. it's hard but worth it.

my only gripe was one i'm, sure you've all run up against. it seemed like everytime anyone made a comment, there was always a glance my way, and some comment like, "well, but for a little dog like him. . ."

the instructor seemed pleased when i firmly stated that timmy has four legs, so he walks - i don't carry him around.

i guess it's a fine line. yeah, there are some considerations based n his side (like the amount of ground we cover, or whether i have to stand or can sit). but he's a dog, like every other dog. so i treat him like a dog, however lower to the ground he is.

timmy's having a bit of a hard time with the long line training, but we'll get there i'm sure. i'll keep you all posted!

Keep us updated! He will change their perceptions soon enough. Chis are very smart dogs, once you figure out how to motivate them. Stubborn can be confused as stupid by a lot of people, and everyone knows chis are very stubborn!!

Congratulations on starting training with Timmy. You will love it. Ignore naive people's comments, we all know you will make a brilliant team! It does seem like a lot of homework. I get my students to do only 5-6min training per day total. Keep it fun for both of you and the skies the limit.

Silly question, but.... How does one find a training school! Corona is such a good girl, but I think it would be fun to get her some actual training, as well as myself! I don't know any dog commands or anything!!! She is great on a leash and seems to listen well but it would be fun to get her to do tricks and what not!!

Congratulations on starting obedience classes with your dog! They are definitely worth it, even if obedience training is a lot of of work. In the end, you'll have a very well-behaved dog . Plus, you're getting him to work, and he'll have more impulse control .

Plus, you can go soooo much further with obedience than just tricks. There is even competitive obedience. Some also teach trick classes.
