Default Toilet Training Outside

Hi All,

I'm now allowed to walk Archie outside! And its been a great experience. He's loving it!
But I need to find a transition for him to learn to go to toilet outside. He's currently holding it in throughout the whole walk, then jumping on the pee pad as soon as we get through the door.
I have tried to take the pee pad with me (with a bit of his pee on) and place it down on surfaces that he has a good sniff at. And I use the word "busy", which he has associated with going to the toilet, but nothing happens.
Is there any other way to try and make him go? Would him watching another dog pee help him so he knows to cock his leg up? (I know it might mean following around a dog next time but I'm willing to sacrifice the awkwardness)

That should come naturally. Mine is pee pad trained but basically started to teach herself to go outside. I started taking her out and after that she followed and only when I'm going to be more than 3 hours do I put a pee pad down does she ever use it. Don't worry he will start to get the message. As soon as he wakes up take him outside guaranteed he will start to go.

You could try taking him to another spot where dogs have been around so he can smell, or the pee pad is a good idea. With mine I trained him we go to the bathroom first before walking as I've heard that some will hold it all walk long to get a longer walk. I also use a command 'go bathroom', it took him a long time to get the idea but I just put him down in the same spot and always said it.

I think Meoshia has a dog that does this. I remember her telling a story about it, at least. Following another dog is a good idea. My boy loves to mark a fresh spot!

Thank you 😊
I'm hoping this weekend will give enough time to extend the outdoors for a bit lore than normal at lunchtime and see if he will do anything

Wish me luck!

My mum's chihuahua used to be like that. I think she learned over time during long walks where she couldn't hold it in anymore. I think spending a long time outside is a good idea. Praise him and give lots of treats if he does and I bet he will learn in no time.

We live in a neighborhood with a lot of dogs. When we first got Mickey (as an adult) he would only go where another dog had gone. Absolutely would not go in our yard. I asked a neighbor to bring her dog in our yard to go. Yes, she thought I was crazy at first but it worked.
