How old is your puppy and how long have you had him?
I know (more or less) when my puppies need to wee especial in the am. for instance none of them pee before 7am.

Havent got him yet but he will be 8 weeks when we do.. Im just really not sure what to do when we first get him (until he gets in a routine and we know when he needs to pee), im undecided :/

I did think about putting a puppy pad in there at first as I dont want him to pee on his bedding, but then I heard dogs dont pee where there bed is and I think thats what has confused me..

puppies that small can't hold their bladder for that long.
And that dogs don't pee where the sleep is such a LIE lol!
Both my puppies who are potty train and always good boys have pee on their beds and mine also! oh and the couch as well.

Maybe someone else could be more helpful I have never used a crate. At night my puppies have a small closed area with their beds water and a pad. Have you thought about a pen instead?

Yes I have been looking at pens but on most of them, where the door is there is a bit of a step which I'd worry pup wont be able to go in and out of it freely

For an 8 week old I would start with some old blankets that you don't mind getting ruined just incase and then let get up every 2 hours to let him out of the crate to pee.

If you leave the pad in the crate he might associate it with peeing and could make more work for you in future.

With my Jack Russell I had to get up every 2 hours for two weeks. It was tiring so you could also have it near your bed for a while then let him out and put him on his pad so you don't have to go downstairs.

I really wouldn't want to put a pad in mine as I don't want to encourage peeing in there even with a pad.
