So here is a little back story before I tell you the good news
I had braces for 6 years as a kid and teenager. I wore headgear, had this awful thing called a herbst appliance, and had to wear my braces for what seemed like forever! I had a severe over jet (which is where your lower jaw is too far back so your top teeth stick out, AKA buck teeth) of about 9mm. Once my braces were off, my jaws were aligned and my teeth were straight. Eventually though, my jaws moved and now I have the lovely "buck teeth" again. Not only do I hate the way it looks, it makes it difficult for me to eat as my front teeth are so far apart, and makes closing my lips hard. Here are some photos so you kind of know what I mean:
Anyways, so I went to my orthodontist last year to see what we could do. He said I could get braces for a year and have jaw surgery to correct it. This idea really freaked me out, because they cut apart your jaw, add a plate to it, and then you have your mouth rubber banded shut for two weeks! It seemed very drastic and it is sooo expensive. Since I pay for everything by myself, there is no way I could afford it. I left really upset and discouraged.
A year later, Penny decided to take a chomp at my retainer and cracked it in half. I went in to get a new one, and my orthodontist again asked me if I wanted to get my teeth fixed. I said yes but I couldn't afford it. He said okay, asked for some X-rays, and then came back a few minutes later after looking at the X-rays. He said that he could give me braces for free to correct my over jet, provided that I paid to have 2 teeth extracted. I would have two bicuspids (premolars) removed so that my top teeth could be pulled back in line with my bottom teeth. I am worried how it will look, as I have heard that people have had this done and their face sort of "Collapses", but it is different for everyone and I trust my ortho.
Sorry to write a novel, but I just had to share! My teeth have bothered me forever and are a huge confidence issue for me. Getting them fixed for free could be the best thing that ever happened to me!
