Default Fat Cat!

Hi everyone! I'm having trouble with my fat cat. He is about 4 years old now and he's 18 lbs. He's been on diet food for about 2 years now. I used to have him on Eukanuba but took him off that and put him on Science Diet Light about a year ago. THAT wasn't working so today I bought him Natural Balance reduced calorie. I have the dogs on Natural Balance and they do really well on it.

My question is this. On the bag it says for cats that are 18 lbs they should have 1 1/2 to 1 3/4 cups of food per day. We only feed ours about 1 cup a day and he's this fat. What should I do? I was thinking of starting off feeding him the same amount as always and see how that goes, then if there's no reduction in weight, we'd lower his food a little. Any suggestions?

**edited to add** I was also wondering what else I can do about this besides the food thing? It's not like you can take a cat for walks.

i don't know about the food but does he get enough exercise? maybe you could try walking him with a cat harness?

my sis had a very "big" cat that she tried to get to lose weight so she started feeding him less but he never did

My cat had the EXACT same problem. She was soooo fat that she couldn't even run around any more. I tried so many foods, reduced calorie and everything and nothing worked until I switched her to Nature's Variety, the Salmon one ... she loves it and I feed her as much as she wants and she's still losing weight. She's lost so much weight and now she's really active again.

About walking cats ... you have to start this when they are a kitten, right away, or it'll be extremely difficult (with most cats, impossible) to get them to walk on a leash. Maybe try catnip ... that really gets them going, I know it makes my cat get more active. Or a scratch post. Scratching for cats is how they work out. They are really working their back and arm muscles when they go at scratching. I got my cat a really cool scratch post that looks like a palm tree, and it has to "coconuts" hanging from it. I just use the spray catnip all over it and she just goes at it ^_^

Yeah, I'll have to try those things.....except for the harness. I did try that before and let's just say it didn't go very well .

Here's a pic of him on a chair in our living room. The chair is a normal sized chair and as you can see he almost fills the whole thing! Everybody that sees him says "OH MY GOD, what a big cat!" LOL. One thing that's good though is that he's still pretty active and he even jumps onto our speakers to get to our window in our family room. It's 1/2 below grade so the window is about 4 feet off the ground. The speaker is about 3 feet or so.

We got him when somebody dropped him and his brother off on the side of the road at my boyfriend's receptionists house. He was probably only about 3-4 weeks (according to the vet) and was able to eat but when he would drink, he was still sucking the milk off the plate. His name is Chester but he doesn't answer to that. We call him Kitty and he comes. He was only about the size of his head when we got him.

Oh my gosh he is so cute <3 I know this is horrible but I LOVE fat cats I just think it's the cutest thing lol

The only suggestion I have is trying out different toys. They have those electronic mice that run around on the floor, not sure if he'd be interested but maybe that would get him up and moving a bit. Also those feathers on a stick or a laser pen. Some toys for him to chase around would probably be some good exercise for him. Post more pics He's so cute!

hahahaahaha!! I just found this one of him. He sleeps in the middle of the floor like this sometimes.....until little doggies go over and bug him.

What a lovely cat!
Try playing with him. You can even try petting him a little more 'energetic' that usual. It will hopefully 'force' him to join the game.
I have a very lazy cat. He doesn't care about toys at all. I know he loves attention and wants to play, but he is just... lazy. I play with him and rub his belly and usually he joins in, moves around on his back and then plays for a few minutes. I know it's not an excercise, but it's better than nothing.

I'm going to try and get him more active but I was thinking: what if some cats are just MADE to be fat? haha! I just don't know.
