Default Tattoo question!

So I want to get another tattoo, this will be the fifth. But I'm having a problem with the location. I have one on my ankle, my lower back, upper back and wrist. I want this one on my arm. So here's the thing. I've never been one to worry about what other people thought of me. But I'm a little worried that if I get this one on my arm it will affect how others look at me. I'm pretty sure this is coming from my mother-in-law. She made a comment to Greg about my tattoos and piercings, saying how people will look at me differently and I won't get jobs. and of course he tells me this!! What do you girls think? Should I put it on my arm or somewhere more discreet? Oh, and it's a Geisha. I call her a butterfly Geisha cuz her arm will be extended and you will see a butterfly wing in her kimono. Ties in nicely with my other butterfly tats!!

That sounds really pretty!

Unfortunately I think in reality people do judge. I wouldn't worry about what other people thought.. there's always going to be people out there who judge. But I do know from experience (my mom is a director at a hospital) that tattoos and piercings aren't always allowed to be shown. When my boyfriend had his eye brow pierced he had to wear a band-aid over it at work and the guys with tattoos had to wear long sleeve shirts. It wasn't up to my mom since she didn't make those rules but I think some jobs do enforce some rules about tattoos and piercings. Although with it being on your arm it doesn't sound like it would be hard to cover up.

Input from someone a little older... (and I love tattoos!)
But, yes it does matter when you go out to look for jobs or work with the public. This is my personal view on the whole situation:
Tattooing at this moment (and piercings) are huge... many and varied people are joining in this trend (including some of us older people who never would have dared 20 yrs ago). However, a trend is a trend... eventually piercing/tattooing will either become the norm or will fade out. Until then those who are marking their bodies have to compromise in order to remain "seen". What I mean is the judgement, the tattooing trend is still in its infancy and there are many out there in the professional world with a "say" who look down upon body marking. I am not saying its fair, right, or wrong, just trying to explain that while multiple tattoos/piercings are "normal" they are still not always accepted.
My 19 yr old son is working on a sleeve. I have tried to instill that he just keep it half sleeved. I love his tats, they are gorgeous and he did all the artwork his self. But in the real world (where generations collide) he has to look at his potential future, not the job he's doing now or what he thinks he'll do (he expects to be a tattoo artist) but what MIGHT happen. I try to explain that he could get as many has he wants, but put them in places that if he HAD to he could cover them up easily. From that he decided to cover his shoulders! YIKES. Anyway, yes, I have a tattoo, and yes I'd love another but again, I'm trapped in what people think because if I put that second tat on my ankle where I want it I would have to wear socks at work (rules). I don't think its unreasonable to have these rules because again, there is a collision of generations in the real world.. who's to say that when you all are older, and in control of the "norms" that the then younger generation will expect to be tattooed and show it! Times change everything but we are still between times....

ok so much for my "lesson on life" LOL Sorry to drone along....

Hello Brenda! Good to see you and good advice. My hubby has tatoos that he got 40+ years ago when he was in the service and one of them is on the lower part of his arm. He is supposed to keep it covered at all times, which means if they enforce the rule, he has to wear long sleeved shirts year 'round. They also have "work shirts" that they do have to wear and that IS enforced which means he has to wear a long sleeve shirt under the T/Polo type shirt that they are required to wear. It can get mighty hot in the summer time.

I would think long and hard about where you are going to be putting it, because as Brenda says, "there is a collision of generations in the real world". And it does indeed affect your employment opportunities as well.

this is a tough one! what field do you work in? some professions care less i think. I have my nose pierced and a tattoo on my ankle and neither have ever been a problem, but I have never had a serious office job. I will have to take out my nose ring in the fall because I am going to be doing clinical work in an elementary school for Grad school and its not allowed. I have been teaching at a private school and they didn't care, no one even noticed for like months!! I talk about the nose ring because I am glad that I can take it out now, 7 yrs after i got it. I have had my tattoo for almost 10 yrs and I still love it but no one really looks at my ankles. So i guess its whether you think that it will interfere with a job hunt. There are always people who will judge. If you think that it is going to be hard to cover up and that it will be hard to get a job than maybe you could have it done in another spot. Do you have any pictures? I really love tattoos!

I work in health care. I was working in a prison and I never had a problem. I have a nose piercing and one right below my lower lip, I also have a tattoo on my wrist that's visible. It was never a problem in a government job, but it was at Peir 1...go figure!! Right now I'm working in a pub til I go back to school. After school, I'll either be in a lab or a morgue(pathology assistant!) Probally won't matter there!! LOL

mabe keep it upper arm, that way it can be hidden with a short sleaved shirt in the summer or shown off in tanks and halters.

it gives you the option of having it on the arm and still not realy having to worry as much about it not being discreet if needed to be.

i know how it feels thought, right now i have 3, i have plans for 3-4 more and cant figure out where i want to put them lol. i want them places i can show them off, but only show them off when I want to.
shoulder blade, one side of lower back, and thigh are currently occupied lol.

shoulder blade,
This is exactly what I was going to suggest!

I especially like the back of the shoulder area because you can easily cover it when needed, but can just as easily show it off when you want with cute tanks, halters, or strapless tops/dresses.

And actually with the shoulder blade/back of the shoulder area being relatively flat, you might even be able to see and appreciate the geisha's wing better.
