Default Panting???

Why do dogs pant? I thought it was when they were thirsty
but my honey seems to do it a lot even when shes not thirsty
she pant if she runs up too me when her and zac have been playing, when strangers come in,when she is cuddled into me sometimes, when she gets a fright and sometimes she just does it for nothing
zac dosent pant like this i was just wondering.

Hmm...good question. I know that Simon will pant if he has been playing too hard but Harley doesn't. I know that they do pant when they get hot because dogs don't sweat, they release their heat through the pads of their feet, their nose and by panting. Could be she is one hotsy totsy.

Dogs sometimes pant if they are stressed, nervous or in pain. My long coat Rosie will occasionnaly pant if she has fallen asleep on my knee...she gets too warm and will get up and lie on floor for a little while!

As far as I know, panting equals some perspiration. Dogs don't sweat, so when they perspire, it comes out in the form of panting.

I have always read that dogs pant when they get over heated. It helps regulate their body temperature, but yes they also pant when thirsty, stressed out or in pain.
