Default Bruiser's Diary

08/17/05

Today I picked up Bruiser from his breeder, and got lost on the way. On our hour long trip home I think he got a bit car sick and threw up in my lap. Well we got home safely and he got his first look at his new home. He cried and ran for me and has been in either mine or my boyfriends arms all day long. My boyfriend was pretty reserved about having a dog, but as soon as he met Bruiser he fell in love. He's been cooing and kissing at him and acting all goofy since he came home. So far, Bruiser has only had a couple of bites of canned food, no water and hasn't used the bathroom. He's seen most of the house so far, but won't walk around. I think he may be a bit too young yet, but I think that I can handle him. Right now he's behind me on the futon curled up in his fleece paw print blanket, which, so far I think is his favorite blankie. tomorrow, he gets his first bath and exposure to the great outdoors. I need to go to Petsmart and he's going to come along with me. The pet carrier that I bought engulfs him. I'm not going to bother to buy a smaller one right now, because he has a lot of growing to do. He only weighs a bit over a pound and is roughly the size of a small nerf football. I have a lot of ideas on how to train him, the breeder suggested a few books but I bought "chihuahuas for dummies" and so far, I think its a pretty helpful book. But I need to find a few other people around here that have small dogs to play with. I've seen a few people that have small dogs around the area, so maybe I'll talk to them. Well, its time to crate Bruiser for his first nights stay at his new home.

Today Bruiser played and bounced around some, he ate finally and he also peed 4 times on the carpet, even though we have several potty pads around the house. I gave in and bought a smaller carrier, its pretty cute, plaid with a bone cutout on the front. In all of this huge town there are not that many places to buy products for pampered pets, lucky for me there is one very close to me. It was Bruisers first adventure into a store and he did ok. He slept well last night in his crate but I since have discovered that he hates it during the day. I put him in it for a nap and he cried his little heart out, and I could not let him just cry and be scared, so he slept in my lap. He played with a toy today, his little hedgehog that I bought at Ikea. He drags it all over the place. I was really worried about him yesterday, but he seems to be adjusting fairly quickly. Now comes the tedious chore of house breaking. He hasn't quite grasped it yet, but being as Chi's are one of the smartest breeds, I figure he'll catch on pretty soon. I worry that I may do something wrong, but I'm going to enroll him in some puppy classes for obidience and maybe get some house breaking tips. It's our bedtime now, although Bruiser's been asleep for a few hours already.

Awww, your baby sounds adorable. My hubby had reservations about having chi's too, but in no time at all he became the biggest sop ever with our two girls.

I think Bruiser may have an upset stomach from nerves or something, at least I hope thats what it is. Yesterday, he pooped on the carpet 5 times and each time it got runnier. Then this morning when I took him out of his crate, there were drops of it on his blankie. I'm gonna see if maybe it was the canned food, so I took it away. Maybe that will clear it up. But he's also scooting.
Well, I learned to put pictures on my computer, and on my new computer has a trial of photoshop, which ROCKS, so I put some more pics of Bruiser up. He's so darn cute. I've never owned a dog before, so I hope I'm doing everything ok. I heard that I can't take him out for a walk until he gets his Parvo/distemper shot and gets flea&tick treated. I wanted to take him out for a walk, but at the risk of endangering him, I'll wait.
He seems to be understanding that we want him to go on the potty pads. But its gonna be a long road. He hates his crate. He'll only sleep in it for a few hours at a time then he cries and howls and after we take him out he sleeps on our bed all night. I hope this isn't ruining the crate training. Probably. I think he's just too darn smart for our own good. He's 6 1/2 weeks old and already knows how to manipulate. Tricky. But I can't just sit there and let him cry. I guess its not too bad, as long as he doesn't fall off the bed. I should get him those puppy steps.
Well, its lunch time and potty time, so later!

Today was Bruisers first visit to the vet. turns out the poor little guy was sick. He'll be better in a few days though. He's already shown some improvement. He ate all of his dinner and he's playing a lot. Right now he's playing with his tug-rope. I really like our vet, Dr. Scott. She was a very nice lady, and Bruiser seemed to like her a lot. After dinner tonight we were playing and Bruiser got really excited and ran smack face first into the leg of the coffee table. Scared the hell out of me! I've heard of puppies dying from hitting their soft spots, but he's ok, just clumsy.

Jason is jealous of Bruiser's favour towards me. I try to encourage him, but he just prefers me. I can't say I'm offended. Bru still won't sleep at night in his crate, he just cries and howls. I got him to take a nap in it today.

Bruiser was a huge hit at the vets. everyone was telling me how cute he was and they wanted to hold him. There was a lady in the waiting room with a female chi and Bru went straight to her. I guess he misses his mommy.

Its Bru's wind down time now , so goodnight.

Bruiser is all better now. He's happy and hyper and getting kinda chubby. He's taken to biting when he plays and quite often he bites my face, usually my lip. He's going to start puppy classes in 3 weeks. He's 8 weeks old now. Both of his ears are up now too.
Jason is gone now. Deployed to Egypt. Bruiser misses him. He's taken to sleeping in my bed with me at night.
Tonight we were sitting on the couch and Bru was right beside me and he looked right up at me and peed on the couch. No notice at all. He usually whines, but nope. Suprise mom. Little Brat.
I got a few pieces of clothing on ebay for him and none of them really fit, he's so small. I got him an English plaid coat and it's enormous. I don't know if he'll ever fit into it. (to anyone who reads this.... when is a chi full grown? He was 1 lb, 1oz at 7 weeks.) I think though that the size was not listed correctly. It says xxsm but it's huge. I got him a little t-shirt, white with blue sleeves and collar and a fishy print on it. He looks so darn cute in it. I think in about a week it will fit him just right. He doesn't really like it yet, though. He still HATES his collar. I bought a harness today but its huge too. I think maybe I should hold off on the shopping for him until he gets a bit bigger. I'm just so excited.
Well, thats it for now, later.
