Default New here with 16 yr old Chi...

Hi. Normally I wouldn't post anywhere, or join any groups, but today we got the news our little baby girl has stage 4 heart murmur. She will be 16 in a couple of weeks. We are heartbroken, we of course knew one day she would begin a decline, but just never ever ready for it. My husband is completely beside himself but doesn't show it. We are really REALLY hoping our girl makes it back home as we are overseas now with the military. But when we took these orders, I told my husband "you know she probably won't be coming home with us right?" He is very quiet about it but I can see the hurt in his face....
Our little girl has another appt tomorrow out in town as the military base vet doesn't have the medication on hand (she can order it but it takes weeks AND if customs gets pissy, medication will sit on the tarmac for days and spoil in this God forsaken heat) nor does the vet have a means for an echo-cardiogram.

I'm just sad sad sad.... She isn't going anytime soon, but it's just bad news. We lost her sister two years ago Feb 10th (not same littler) my husband was at sea somewhere in the middle east, but was on the phone with me through the at home euthanasia. I held the little one until she went to heaven, and he stayed on the phone with me for an hour.
Ugh, I'm just rambling, I'm sorry. This little one's departure is going to be really bad. You see, we don't have human children, our lives revolve around the Chihuahuas in our family. We had Mackenzie for 16.8 years, and Riley will be 16 March 29. The pain is so great that I honestly am considering never having a dog again.

Sorry, rambling again.

Don't apologize! We have all lost beloved babies, and we are happy to be here and listen. I have not had a dog with a bad murmur, but probably others have and can help you learn about living with a dog with the condition. Sending love to you and your husband!

I have a chihuahua that has a 5/6 murmur and she has had this for 3 YEARS!!! Has been on meds for that long. Doing OK. I know she can 'crash' any time, and yes it will be sad, but this may not be as bad as you think. Question: Is she coughing at all? If so, how often? Is her tummy expanded with fluid (ascites) My dog does and has all of the above, but it still chasing squirrels, and running to the door when people come in! As long as she does this, I'm not doing anything! She eats, drinks, urinates and poops just fine.

I understand your sadness, we too have a chi boy with a heart murmur who is on meds and sees his vet every 90 days to monitor it. He will be 13 on March 12th, and his medication is doing a good job for him to prevent coughing and discomfort. Yes, he has slowed down considerably and he sleeps alot more.. but he is happy, well loved, and brings us such joy. He loves being with our family and we love being with him. We don't dwell on the eventual loss we will suffer, only on the joy we have together now. You are part of a group of chi lovers who do understand and want to encourage you and keep you focused on the positive that having your little girl in your life brings to you and your husband.

Welcome to both of you. Deb

Yes, she's had a terrible cough for a month, we were very worried because the allergy medications weren't working, and that's why we took her in (the soonest available was 2 weeks to get her in)

Her cough is gone, she is on Laskix and Pimobendan (which is not approved in the USA) she has fluid in her lungs, and of course being old congestive heart failure is the cause. She also has an unknown mass that could be pushing in her heart/lungs as well, but of course absolutely no surgery for that - she is too old and that is very intrinsic and intrusive surgery. It is too dangerous to put her under now that she is 16.
She is not herself, her peppy personality is gone, she seems "sad/depressed" I know these are some of the side effects, being dizzy, etc.
We are very happy her cough is gone, relieved..... But the personality went with it, major appetite loss, but we cook up nice thick (but small) steak cubes for her and she will eat two of those a day, we keep her in the kitchen while cooking them up so the smell sparks her appetite. Normal weight on hovers around 4.5 lbs. She is down to 3.9 Still praying because we just don't want it to happen here in Bahrain. We will just snuggle and love her, and totally spoil her, she is in our lap every moment of the day she can be.
We have a follow up appt tomorrow for xrays to see if her lungs have cleared up.
Thank you so much for your responses and warm wishes My husband and I, and our little girl Riley are grateful, being able to talk about it help a lot since my husband is shutting down and won't talk about it because his eyes well up.
We are getting through this, he is back at work tomorrow so he will be incredibly busy, that will distract his mind a bit from this.

Zarita takes enalapril and pimobendan and lasix (furosemide). She takes these in a compounded liquid, except for the lasix. She takes the liquid 2x a day, and the lasix once a day. She also takes metacam for arthritis pain. She seems happy, and barks at the squirrels, and the doorbell. Yesterday, she scared me, when I picked her up to give her the evening dose, she got really whinny, and started to cry. We held her and put her up on the table, where she calmed down after 5-10 minutes.(she loves being up on the table, as she was fed there for years) I must have hurt her shoulder when I picked her up.
