OK yall, buckle up.
Im a big, tattooed biker guy and have had mostly "pitbulls" for pets throughout my life. I even have been involved in PB rescues from fighting rings and rehabbing violent pits into therapy dogs. In fact, 70% of the dogs I personally worked with are now in jobs as a therapy animal.
A few months ago, I felt the need for a dog. The short version of this is I went to the shelter and got a pit who ended up needing to be put down due to a pretty bad neurological disorder, then another that didnt "fit" in my home, and finally a dog that was perfect, but her lungs werent developed and she ended up passing.
I gave up on having a dog, at least a shelter dog, and made the comment "Im done with big dogs, the next damn dog I get will be a chihuahua!" (because Id never have a chi...) Two days later, while looking up information about volunteering at the shelter, I stupidly look at the dog adoption list and see, Guido (now named Jack). He, like most Chi's couldnt deal with the stress of the shelter so he was in a foster home. It was instant love.
Now, he has one heck of a story, which I will try to keep brief.
Apparently he was brought to the animal society in critical condition a few months ago after getting hit by a car. He suffered a few cuts, a broken leg and an abdominal hernia. He's lucky to be alive being he's only 9lbs.His owner showed up a full hour after he was hit, then proceeded to try to take him while he was still sedated and had a drain installed from the surgery on top of the still broken leg. After being told the fee (which wasnt much) to have him taken to a vet of their choice to finish the medical work, the owner tried to have them put him down because if they couldnt have him no one could. Well, they convinced them to leave him to go to a new home. He is fully healed up, still hobbles a little but no pain. I fell in love with him when I saw him and his radar ears. He's a bit feisty but really sweet. Plus he has a heart on his side and a half brown butt. Apparently someone named him Guido, and I couldn't let that stand...
I made arrangements to meet him right away, as the foster parent was leaving town for a week and I couldnt wait. We met, he doesnt like new people (neither do I, cant blame him) and did the paperwork and hes been with me since. He actually does things that my old patrol dog would, and when we arent at home if I go to rest in a chair or hammock, hell sit on me and guard until I tell him he can relax. I like it.
NOW, on to the questions.
1:He does NOT like it when we leave, and barks for a time. Is there a way to curb that? Same thing for when we come in the house, and its annoying at 3 am when I get home...
2: This is the one that prompted me to sign up and isnt a problem, but more of a WTF: when we're gone and he has reign of the house, he hoards our shoes. Tonight we I got home, I found all my shoes and a few of my GF's in a neat pile in the living room. I know he sleeps with them when we arent here. Why?
