Default Hola

Just rescued a 10 year old high bred long hair chihuahua. I would love input and advice. He is very skiddish and timid. All suggestions appreciated. We are the 'same age' so I have been very calm and patient. Thanks all

Hi there
My 2nd Chihuahua was afraid of literally the entire world.
I really have to think way back as she's older than 7 now.
She was extremely skiddish and timid.
At that time I never really was aware that I could go online and get people's opinions and tips.
But I would pet her when I had "time" I would literally have to "chase" her. And then I would sit her in my lap and would pet her.
I would offer treats and I would throw them closer and closer to me until eventually (after a lot of time) she would get them from my hand.
I would lay with her where she was comfortable, which usually was on the floor on a blanket. I would talk in a soft voice when I would pet her.
At that time I had Brownie (1st Chihuahua I've ever owned) and we had a "special" bond. She would watch us as he would come up to me and I would give him affection. I really do think he helped her to accept me.
She absolutely hated men (still does but only certain ones now)
She would pee every time you would try to pick her up. She eventually stopped doing that on her own.
She would get scared in the front yard and would run scared into a neighbor's yard.
It took me a very long time to get her where she is now.
I can now trust her to be off leash in the front yard. And she is the ones who keeps my boys in check when need be.
As far as other kind of advice I don't have much but good luck
And you'll definitely need a lot of patience.

A pen would keep him in one space, and give him confidence. Put in his bed/carrier/crate and his food and water, and a few chewies/toys. Then take him out when you have time to love on him. This will teach him not to run away. I have an extremely shy female, who would run away if I reached for her. With the pen, she runs in the pen, and I can get her. Tincture of time will help alot! I use an Iris pen which you can get through Amazon or at the petco/smart stores.
