Default Very scared and submissive Chi

Hello

I am a little stressed about my Chi. I rehomed a 5 years old male chi 3 days ago. He is very very scared. I gave him loads of space and now he leaves his crate, follows me to the kitchen and allows me to pet him if i approach really really slowly and lower myself to his level. although 10 mins later he could be running away from me hiding under the bed because i walked his direction.

He does make eye contact with me/ stares at me when i do things.

He never ever barks or makes sound. each time i try to pick him up (to take to walks) he becomes submissive and shakes in my hands. poor thing's heart beats like hell

He is so gentle when i hand feed him, never seen a dog of this sensitive nature.

Do you guys think that he will be fine in the end?

Thank you

It will take time but just keep up what you are doing. Sounds like you are on the right track.

Yes, it sounds like you are doing the right things! Dominance/submission are not actually things that motivate dogs. Think of it as fear/insecurity. What we call "submissive" behavior is appeasement behavior. It is like he is saying, "don't hurt me, I am not a threat!"

I agree with Reta. Keep doing what you are doing. If you startle him and he runs away, just ignore him. He'll think 'oh well, she's not coming after me, so I'm safe'. If you make a big deal over his running away, he may think there IS something wrong! 3 days is not really enough time for him to come out of his shell. Give it a month!!! I have a very shy chi, and she stays in her pen for the majority of the day---her choice. Door is open all day and closed only at night. She is comfortable as long as I don't try to pick her up. Then she just melts. Cuddles as long as you have a hand on her. Let your hand go, and she is gone. She has been this way since I got her as a 4 month old pup. She went to puppy school, and spent the 6 weeks under my chair!

I think your doing just fine, plus it's only been about 3 days.
I got Sunshine at the age of like 2 or 3 and was mistreated and lived in a backyard with many othe dogs. Had no human socialization.
She was a very scared dog it literally took her about 2 years to "fully" trust me and she still has her "moments"
It was very difficult for me as I felt like maybe she'd do better with someone else
But now I know I was wrong

Sounds like you're doing things right! Just give him more time. This is a whole new life for him, and it make take a few months or even a year for him to truly feel settled in! Just try to let him come to you, and follow his pace. You'll get there

We've adopted 2 adult chis. Both took a while to adjust. One almost 6 weeks. He had been loved. The other was a rescue that had been fostered for a long time and she adjusted much more quickly. Definitely longer that a puppy but it's worth it.
