Default Extremely sensitive ribs???

Hi there. I'm new here. I adopted my now 8 y.o. Chihuahua last year when he was 7. He came from abusive puppy mill & was used as a stud for 7 yrs. He freaks out when I touch his rib area. But freaks out!!! I was at the vet today and $358.00 later the vet saw nothing at all on the xrays! Can anyone help/relate? It's rare when he doesn't freak out.

A dog who has been abused will have reactions to situations that simply don't make "sense" to you. There's a good chance he was abused in that area regularly, or has learned to associate being touched there with a negative experience and simply is scared. Don't push it, just avoid it when you can and slowly adjust him to it in small increments, maybe using treats if he's food motivated to start giving him positive experiences when you touch his ribs.

Maybe he was put in some sort of harness when he was supposed to 'serve' his ladies?? Whatever, I would start some de-sensitation with him. Work with him slowly, and with yummy treats. Chicken, p.butter on a spoon, etc. Get him close to you, on your lap maybe? Give him a tiny (tip of your pinky fingernail!) piece of treat and just touch very lightly his ribs. Just a second. If he can't tolerate this, then back off and have him see you pet him, not touching his ribs. Will he be OK with this? Nerve damage does not show up on x-rays, so that might be what is hurting him. Does his skin 'wrinkle' when you pet him? If might be that you will just have a dog that you have to be careful of his rib area for now, at least. Good luck
