Default Hi, all!

Hi, everybody! Greetings from St. Louis, Missouri. Longtime dog lover here (and cat lover too, plenty of pet love to go around), looking to adopt a puppy for my son who is OBSESSED with chihuahuas. Before we commit, though, I wanted to learn from and post with the experts, so I'm looking forward to getting to know all of you!

Thanks! I've known too many dog and pet moms and dads who didn't know what they were getting into and got in over their heads, which always struck me as so unfair for the poor pets. I never want to have to think about rehoming - once they're part of the family, they're family forever!

How old is your son? If he is very young (under the age of reason) then I'd wait. If he knows how fragile a chihuahua CAN be, then OK. I'd look for a larger chihuahua rather than a tiny one. I'd let him know there will be rules about when he can play( not after eating) and when he has to sleep etc. I'm sure you will oversee any play so that it is not necessarily rough. (boys like to wrestle!) Other than that, go for it!

My chihuahuas are CRAZY about my nieces. Babysat them the first summer I got my first chi. No problems, definitely bonded. He is NOT crazy about other kids. I think my biggest concern would be to make sure when your kids have friends over it is friend time, not puppy time. Little supervised puppy visit with friends and puppy takes a nap/alone time. Overwhelmed chi can develop bad habit. Larger puppy's can run and play and join in with all the children antics and fun. Chi can join but must be supervised and short. I love my chi's best dogs ever!!!! Their size does mak them a little more work. They are such wonderful little dogs.
