Default Puppy Bites

Hi, My 8 week old Minnie bites. I realize that it is related to teething and I do offer her a toy when she goes after my nose, toes, fingers etc. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. My concern is that it will continue once her adult teeth are fully in. Puppy teething nips are one thing but dog biting is not acceptable. Any suggestions on how I can prevent problems?

Get a tug toy to teach acceptable biting - the toy - and unacceptable biting - you. It sounds counterintuitive but if you teach biting on a toy such as a tug toy they stop biting you. Tug is a great game and you can let her ďwinĒ sometimes.

Iíve heard a lot of people dismiss tug, but think of it.....thereís a reason agility dogs and working dogs are trained on it, itís a great reward!

My dogs always learned tug as an acceptable game as opposed to biting you.

Another way to get her to stop is to put your hand over the bridge of her muzzle with very gentle pressure. Mom corrected her and her siblings that way.

When my puppies started to bite, I had a 'special' toy that I kept near my recliner, and I would put it in kibble during the night. Smelled great to them! That was the only time they got to chew that toy, in my lap. I had a little rubber fish that one of them adored, and another one had a rubber chicken!f Almost as soon as their 'big' teeth came in, they just sort of slowly quit that need to chew.
