Default Socialising an older chihuahua

Hi everyone.

I am just looking for some advice. I have a 7 year old female chihuahua, however, she never got properly introduced to dogs. Whenever she sees other dogs she just barks immediately and she?s very uncomfortable around them, she won?t let them sniff her etc.

I was just looking for the best way to go about introducing her to dogs as my boyfriend was thinking of rescuing a dog so I?d love for them to get along. I?m not sure because of her age she would need a professional dog trainer for her to get over her fear or if there?s anything I can do to help her.

Thanks for reading.

I'm wondering if there is a puppy class around that you could take? Talk with the trainer and explain what the problem is and see what he/she says. Then there are day care, but I think you have to have a friendly dog to go. What does she do when a dog tries to sniff her? Try and get away/growl/snarl/bite?

I thought because she was older she couldn?t go to puppy classes? I seen there was a dog behaviourist near me but there is a waiting list! We went to meet the dog we are thinking of rescuing today and he has the most amazing temperament. She barks straight away when she sees a dog, if they come over to her she will try get away and then she will snarl if they don?t take the hint. I just want her to have a good relationship with other dogs.

They don't necessarily have to be puppies. She could join a "beginners" class.
They have classes at PetSmart/ Petco they even have classes at shelters (probably not all of them)

I went to a puppy class with my rescued chi that was 7 years old. She was a puppy mill mama, and terribly shy. Never did come out of her shell, and the trainer said 'just let her be a dog'. She house trained herself by watching the other dogs, and was great with them. She loved to sun herself on the back of the couch! She lasted just 3 more years before dying of a lung disease due to breathing ammonia fumes for 7 years.

I?m so sorry to hear that. I will definitely have a look at puppy classes then! I?m sure she will come out her shell, she will just need time. Thank you for replying.
