Default Vaccinating small puppy advice needed

Hi all,
We currently have a 7 year old long haired Chihuahua named Maximus and we have just adopted a little 10 week old smooth coat Chi. We will be picking him up from the airport on Thursday
The breeder is an older lady with firm beliefs about a variety of aspects of Chi care, namely she does not vaccinate until a pup is over 1 pound 8 ounces. Our wee boy is 10 weeks and weighs a little over 12 ounces so is not yet vaccinated.
Our vet firmly believes in FULL vaccination schedules. So, what do I do? What if I vaccinate him and something goes horribly wrong? What if I don't vaccinate until he is bigger and he gets sick?
Any advice would be appreciated
Many thanks in advance
Terry

We titer to check for immunity. It is a blood panel and it tests for immunity in the blood panel. Rabies they have to be 16 weeks or older so you have time there. My chis and coonhounds never receive full vaccinations or multiple vaccines at one time. That way if there is a reaction a vet can determine which vaccine caused it. Mine are all adults now but my Vet is still very cautious esp with my 7lb Chi BG. She has had a rabies reaction so this year we will try to medically exempt her. Remember that every dog gets the same dose so you 12oz baby would receive the same dose as a 150lb mastiff.

I will ask our vet about the blood work you suggest, thank you
We have not vaccinated Maximus in the last 3 years as we don't belive it's necessary, but now I'm concerned about the puppy!
The thought of the puppy getting the same amount of vaccine as a 150 lb mastiff scares me! That's insane!
Would you recommend that the new pup just gets the Parvo vaccine, as that seems to be a common disease?
My thanks again

That is REALLY tiny for a 10 week old baby. At this age some puppies start to lose the mothers immunity. So unless you are going to keep the puppy isolated, I'd either have the titers done, or just go a head with the usual vaccinations. Parvo and distemper are the two vaccines that I think are important. Most vets do not have just those vaccines though, just the 1-5. I would also ask if the mother dog was vaccinated just prior to her pregnancy, or when she was vaccinated. I know it is scary, but most pups have an off day the day after the 'shot' and then are fine.

Yes he is a little itty bitty boy lol.
As for keeping him isolated, we can do so other than from our older boy, Max. I will be speaking with our vet about limiting his vaccinations as much as possible until he's a bit bigger. Hopefully she can just give him the Parvo and Distemper
Can't wait to pick up our wee boy, just 26 hours to go

With being isolated your boy has been vaccinated so he is fine to be around the puppy. The issue is outings. PetSmart, Petco, Dog Parks etc. With a Titer it test his immunity. All of mine were tested as a puppy. Two were immune, two needed vaccines. Try to do individual vaccines if you can just distemper just parvo no combos if you have to give a vaccine as it lessens chances of hurting his little system.

Thanks again for the reassurance. We will not be taking our wee boy on any outings until he is older and vaccinated.
Hopefully our vet will have single vaccines available.
The breeder has just informed me that his pre-flight vet check went well and he is now a whopping great big 13.5 ounces . I was incorrect when I said he was 12 ounces, that was his 8-9 week weight.
I am going to be a nervous wreck until I have him in my arms.
It is such a long flight and I am freaking out about hypoglycemia! I have Nutrical ready for the moment he is handed over to me. I also have baby chicken and broth, and even some pediatric electrolyte just in case.
