Default New mom of a 13 year old toothless Chihuahua

Hello,

We adopted a 13 year old toothless Chihuahua named Roxy. She is super sweet and we love her. I have owned many dogs, but this is my first Chihuahua. I joined to better understand the breed and how I can help her live her best life in her golden years.

Hi, her heath is mostly good. However we are having a few issues which is why I signed up. I have always owned Beagles and Retrievers, she is my first Chihuahua. We are having issues with anxiety, so we are walking her two times a day. She loves to walk!! Our biggest issue is sleep and hunger. When we got her she was skin in bones. We have managed to put some weight on her, but not enough. We feed her wet food, but I am wondering if it goes through her too quick because she is always hungry. If we feed her too late she wakes up at 2:30 like clockwork needing to go out. So I am trying to figure out when to feed her, how often and recommendations on slow digesting food. Any thoughts?

I think it is GREAT that you adopted a senior citizen! Ask any chi related question and you're likely to get several answers! Welcome to the forum.

Aww, that's fantastic. My "dream" in life is to have a dog ranch where I can go to local shelters and adopt the senior dogs that can't find homes because everyone wants younger dogs, and give them a happy retirement home to live their final years at! Congrats on your new girl and welcome

Being a senior in a new environment it might take her a little while to adjust. If she continues with anxiety you can try Rescue Remedy but otherwise just be patient.

As for food she might be trying to catch up and needs more than you are giving her. What brand and how much are you feeding her?

I would introduce some high quality grain free kibble. I think it has more calories per cup? Also I would feed her 2-3 times a day. The last feeding around supper time, so hopefully she would be able to 'go' before bedtime. I also like a pen (Iris) so that you wouldn't have to get up at 2:30 in the am! The anxiety will hopefully get less and less as she gets adjusted. Otherwise Rescue Remedy is an excellent suggestion. You can put it in her water too.
