Default Rabies Vaccine

Hi, I'm new here I have a 1 year old chihuahua who will be 2 next month. Yesterday I took her to get her shots, she recieved her parvo shot when she was a puppy and that was it. Yesterday she got 3 which I'm really worried about, I was totally unaware that chihuahuas don't tolerate more than one vaccine well at the same time. I agreed to her getting parvo/distemper, bordatella and rabies. I had only asked for the rabies vaccine clueless to the possible side effects now I'm terrified. When we got home yesterday she was doing well I put her in her pen so she could eat and rest which she did. I went ahead and checked on her a few minutes later and tried picking her up but when I did she let out the biggest yelp. Because she never does that I assumed she was sore and let her rest. She's doing fine now, running around like always but still wont let me pet her nor pick her up I have to carefully do so when I have to or else she'll start yelping like crazy. Even though I've read that being sore is normal after shots I'm really scared she'll start developing crazy side effects from the rabies vaccine. I read some terrifying stuff about it and I feel awful knowing that i basically put her through this. Is it normal for her to be this sore? I'm really scared for my baby.

I would notify your vet and let them know. It could just be she is sore

My tiny (barely 4 pounds) had to get some pain meds the day after 'cause she was so sore. She also acted sick. This was after the parvo/distemper/hepatitis shot combo. I haven't had her revaccinated, except for rabies.

I have two tiny chis both full grown 4 pound and under 4 pounds. one six pound chi. They have had all their vaccination (combo shot) only had one react to shots. She swelled a little in at the injection area but showed no sign of pain. I believe it was due to the person giving the shot rather than the vaccine. They really jabbed it in. I changed vets. Next vet gave her a steroid shot before her shots just to make sure the swelling was from the jabb. Never had a problem again. Didn't even know until right now that chi don't tolerate those shots well.

And the thing about some shots that makes no sense is they give a 4 lb Chihuahua the same amount of vaccine as a great Dane. That is 1 cubic centimeter of stuff. If a 200 lb human was to get an equivalent amount it would be 50 cc's. And that is like having
a 3 inch tall, 3 inch wide, 3 inch long box of stuff pumped into your arm if you weigh 200lbs. Just to put is in perspective.
A 1200 lb horse will get 2 cubic centimeters. Go figure.

Our vet makes sure to give our guys only one vaccination at a time. However, the boys are both very sensitive to the rabies vaccine (they're half brothers, so it wasn't surprising when the younger one had the same reaction when he was given it as his older brother). They both developed a lump - which wasn't LARGE, of course, but everything on a Chihuahua is large! - at the injection site. It went away no problem in both of them, but took a few weeks. Gizmo is actually due for his next rabies shot in a month or so, and now that he's four years old and having already had it once, I'm curious to see if he develops the same lump.

Some vets give a dose of benedryl before they give a shot, if the dog has had a reaction to the shot before. Something to ask about?

Yes, it was decided after the first round that would give that a go next time, so we'll see if it helps.
