Smile New Here :)

Hello Everyone

I just wanted to say hi and to introduce myself and my babies. I joined to ask some questions and get some tips on Chihuahua's in general. I'm a fairly new Chi momma as I just got my first Chihuahua a little over a year ago. I've researched the breed but wanted to reach out to fellow Chihuahua enthusiasts and share some photos and funny stories about my little girls

Hello all
First I'd like to say a huge thank you to all the members who've posted such great information and tips here!! Wow, super helpful and I've learned a lot. I'm about to get my first chi, I've always loved them but am a one pet person and had my last pet for 17 years. It's been 4 years since he passed and I gave myself the time I needed to grieve..and to be ready for another companion. I knew I wanted a small chi and have been planning for 2 years...I found him yesterday! I will probably bring him home in a week and a half as I'm in process of getting all my furniture and house stuff from the port, had it all shipped here..thus the house needs to be all set up so no stress for the lil guy. He's currently 7 weeks 4 days and beyond adorable!! I've always wanted a small chi boy and now I'm at the right time in my life and I'm soooo excited..tho not thrilled with sleepless nights. I do have an initial question...he is one of 3 in the litter, all boys..his brothers are double his size!! And his brothers play fight, bark...he doesn't want any part of it, doesn't bark and is very docile quiet and loving...the mother came to me immediately to receive love and would even happily lie on her back in my arms, so I think he has his mothers temperament..which is EXACTLY what I've looked for..quiet, non barky, docile...his size is unbelievably small compared to his brother..not just weight, but also height..his frame is tiny but sturdy..he's 1.08 pounds now and I think it's best to have him checked by my vet who has a ton of experience with tiny chis before paying the owner...do you agree? Planning to do this on the day he is to come home to me...any thots or suggestions on this?

Welcome Brandi and Lexie!

Lexie, I would be quite cautious about buying a quiet, docile puppy. Usually puppies that can be described with those words are not healthy, unfortunately. An adult like that is one thing, but puppies should be bouncy and bratty. The fact that he is half the size of his brothers would also be a red flag for me. I have met healthy puppies that size, but they were little spitfires. I would encourage you to ask the breeder if you or she can take the pup to a vet of your choosing for a good workup (blood, stool sample, etc.). Things like liver shunts and hydrocephalus are relatively common in these tiny guys, though it could just be worms or another parasite. If it is a parasite infection, don't expect him to stay so mellow! I speak from experience!

I agree with Reta 100%! A tiny, quiet, puppy is SOMETIMES a sick puppy. He should be playing and interested in everything and everyone! Please get this little one checked by a vet asap.

Hi all
And thanks for the advice..he was vet checked, had his first vaccination and is healthy so far. I just got him today!! He's 9 weeks old and definitely interested in checking out my home, he's fairly active and his personality is definitely like his mother, tranquillo. Also..turns out his fathers family has a history of other tiny pups in the bloodline so I'm not worried. Also very interesting is a fact I didn't know until I found him...and that is that I assumed he was a deer head chihuahua...when no, he's actually a short hair Russian toy terrier...many people mistake Russian toy terriers for chihuahuas apparently..and he's pure bred..I'm in love. He is very small and I'm wondering if it's better to put a little water in with his dog food to soften it as eating seems to be a workout with hard food lol..any thoughts on this?? I'm also going to very gradually switch him to chicken, rice, carrots etc..
