Smile New Chihuahua parent

Hi! New Chi parent here. My husband and I adopted Chica (2 years old) a little over a month ago. Joining to engage in conversation and to possibly get tips from other chi parents! She seems to have a submissive urinating problem, and cowers quite a bit, but overall she loves to play and be loved on.

Welcome to the forum
My girl dog was about a year when I got her and she would do the same. She stopped on her own as she became more comfortable with me, the people previously weren't nice to her. But it took literally a little over a year. She still occasionally pees (couple times year) but only when she's very scared. New Years and 4th of July due to fireworks.

This is called submissive urination as you correctly stated. Most of the time, if you ignore the dog when you first come into the room, and just speak to her. Don't lean over her--it is threatening to a dog. Let her come to you and reach down and tickle/rub her chin. Most people will go and pat the top of the head, which again, means you have to lean over. Give her lots of time and she will probably stop this.
